Beeman R9 trigger adjustment

I asked this in the vintage thread before I remembered this thread. I have an old R9 maybe 25 years old. Anyway I want to adjust the trigger weight. All I can find on line is you turn the adjustment screw left to lighten and right to increase the weight. I have never adjusted the trigger so I dont know what to expect. The screw is pretty tight. I would expect this so it doesn't walk out but I dont want to do damage to something because I do something stupid. Is there anything else I haver to do before I adjust the weight? Is there any other adjustments that have to be made? Does the rifle have to be in a particular condition to adjust the screw like cocked, uncocked or anything else. I would think it weird to work on a cocked rifle but who knows. i have seen some pretty weird stuff.
thanks

Uncocked. And they are usually tight. The screw is aluminum. Sometimes the threads gall. If it's really tight you can put a small drop of oil on the threads to hopefully prevent galling. Don't make more than quarter turn adjustments. If you go too loose you'll lose the first stage return.

The screw passes through a metal tab that has one corner bent to lock the screw in place.
The tab must be straightened a bit before the screw can be adjusted.
The trigger pull must be set heavy enough for the trigger to reset (move forward).
After adjustment, the screw may be locked into place with a dab of nail polish on the threads.

Thanks guys. This is good info. If I stand a chance of gauling the screw I won't adjust the weight. If its easy to bend the tab back a bit to unlock the screw thats ok. There is always a trick to these things that only exp people know. Thats why I asked before I ruin something. Like my ole man used to say "If it doesn't move easily with reasonable pressure there is something wrong.
I assume the action has to be removed from the stock to bend the tab.

The screws are normally tight. It should turn without galling or unbending the tab. If it is super tight and feels locked then try unbending the tab a little. Don't go nuts on the tab. Like a knucklehead I completely straightened out the first one I seen thinking it was a problem. I made a bigger mess of it than I started with.
Oh and yes you should remove the action before adjusting the tab.
