Feeling under gunned.

Well, I stopped by the dairy again tonight. Mom was out at her nightly exercise class so dad was in charge of dinner, entertainment and my daughter for the evening. So after a quick stop at the local Taco Time, dinner was taken care of, now for the entertainment.
Knowing the dairy had a slew of new born calves, I knew that was where my daughter would want to be. And lucky for me, I just happened to have the Big Cat in the trunk. While she was off playing with the animals, I went on a few short stalks.
The first shot of the evening was at some black birds feasting on the just delivered corn pile. I missed and sent them all flying. A few unseen doves also took flight and as luck would have it they landed on some tall poles, nearby. I steadied myself against the feed wagon and scored the first dove of the evening. It was approximately 45 yards away and I watched him power into a freshly cut hay field. After making a mental note of his location I headed to the hay stack were some more had taken refuge. I stalked as close as I could and when I arrived at my chosen location I was presented with a choice. Doves at 45 yards or a nosey squirrel peeking at me from the tire pile 20 yards away. What to do? I reasoned the dove would make a nicer dinner then the ground squirrel would so I centered the cross hairs in the middle of the back of a bird facing dead away. Sent the pellet and watched in delight as he just popped up and back down again. Stone cold dead before he hit the ground, just the way we like. I walked over and retrieved then turned to the hay field for the first one. Knowing only the general area where he went down I started looking, I was able to locate some feathers indicating I was getting warmer. Just as my eyes locked on my prize in sprang to life and flew low across the ground and into a large pine tree in across the road, where I don’t have permission to hunt.
On my way back to the car I connected on 2 more only to watch them fly away too. I did manage to anchor a few pest birds but they’re not nearly as exciting as something that can go home with me and make a meal. I will either have to start shooting one of the bigger faster guns or start limiting my shots at these tough birds to 30 yards or less.
Wow, sorry for the long rambling post, enjoy the picture.

Enjoyed your post immensely,,, felt like I was right there with ya
Good shooting on the birds, to bad about the ones that got away but hey,, it happens. I've had the same thing happen to me more than a few times with pigeons and I know the gun/power wasn't the problem. Sometimes it just happens.
Looking forward to your next farm hunt....
sure wish I had those doves to shoot at, I envy you...

Thanks guys, it does happen from time to time but you always still for bad. I just finished tweaking the Remington Summit and I think I'll give that one a try tomorrow. I still haven't set me up blind down there, I just use whatever farm equipment is around. I'm sure if I took my time to build a comfortable hide, complete with a chair and steady rest I could up my numbers by quite a few.
Reading the posts and seeing the pictures of all the ground hogs some have you have been shooting makes me wish I had some of them around here. The only place I've seen them here in Utah is a golf course a few towns over. The wife and I played golf there a few weeks ago and they were everywhere. And very big, just like some of the ones posted here. But I guess we all have our own local targets. Growing up in Utah and shooting doves since I was a kid, makes it seem really unusual that some states consider them protected song birds. I can tell you hunting them here in Utah seems to have no real impact on their population. And with the recent local explosion of the Eurasian Collared Doves they are not even protected by a season, and when the Mourning Dove hunts starts Sept. 1 they don't even count towards a hunters daily bag limit. So I guess all in all even if I don't have the ground hogs to hunt I do have some oppertunitites some of you don't.

Take that 350! You won't feel undergunned again!
When I was in KS, my TF 89 with SuperDomes was a bird killer. Nice pop, lots of feathers and down they went.

At something near 1000 fps, I have to think it wasn't a lack of power, but most likely pass-through.
I know you remember my zombie starling posts from this winter, right? I'm shooting a big cat and even with heavy Crow Mags, I was having big time pass-through problems. In fact, in more than one instance I delivered a coup de grace at 26 yds and found that the pellet passed through the bird and lodged in the fence panel behind him, halfway up the skirt.
I realize, you're talking some serious range (I'm not sure I could make many of those shots with my BC), but I still don't think it's a lack of heat that's the problem.

When hunting zombie starlings, there are two approaches. The first approach is the "Double-Tap". The alternative is cutting their heads off and putting toothpicks through their hearts.
It's your choice.

I've always wondered about just shooting birds with really cheap wadcutters. I mean the Daisy wadcutters are really flimsy lead. You'd think they would ball up and do a lot of damage. My guns shoot them pretty well to be honest.

Atch, I agree on the soft wadcutters. I'd be shooting them myself (my gun actually rather liked the old ones), but a) I don't think I can get anything like them any more (they were very uniform and very soft), and b) they were a bit light.
I may experiment with a few of the old ones that I still have and see how they do on starlings this winter.

You can get Daisy Wadcutters at Wally World usually. The Crossman ones are too hard for what I'm thinking.

most guns will shoot wadcutters relatively well. they are designed to be more accurate, a sharper edge on the head of the head of the pellet, grips the rifling better. they do not "typically" do well at longer ranges (25yds+). anyone else chime in on this?

Try the crossman destroyers in your gun. I have used them out pretty far and as long as you can hit with them they do the rest pretty well. Never had a bird fly away with one of those babies.

Nice shooting Dave. Those Eurasian doves look like they 'd be good eating. Too bad I don't have any around here. Don't fret the birds taking off wounded. It happens. Try using the 350 next time or use Crow Mags or JSB Polymags.
