GROUND HOG #2

I had just about fallen asleep watching hunting when my son came and told me a g hog was eating a pile of birdseed on the ground.not 100% confident in my new titan i grabbed the marauder and put a polymag just under his eye.he flips over on his back shaking, and just as i put another pellet in my gun for a 2nd shot he rolled over and crawled under the shed.Mad as *&^% i had my son reach into the hole to see if he could feel anything.the hog onlt made it a foot under the shed and my son dragged it out.we were both pretty happy. i took a pic of the pellet after i skinned him.

Good shooting and great pic. They are indeed tough critters. It's always amazed me how far they can go after taking a fatal hit. They just don't seem to want to just roll over and die. That looks like a nice tender one..... do you eat them ??

My favorite way to eat the younger ones like that is to cut them up, coat them with whatever seasonings you like and fry them for a few minutes on each side until they are golden brown, just like you'd make fried squirrel. I give mine a hefty coating of garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and cajun spice, but like I said, use whatever spices that you like. Whenever I fry bacon for breakfast, which is way to often according to my doctor
, I save the bacon fat and I keep it frozen in the freezer. Then, whenever I fry up some wild game I will add some bacon fat to the frying oil so that it imparts that wonderful bacon taste into the fried game meat. The bacon fat is of course optional if you are concerned about the fat/cholesterol issue.
Another favorite g-hog recipe of mine is g-hog pot roast. Use whatever pot roast recipe you use for beef... just substitute the g-hog. Just recently I was shopping in the local supermarket and found one of those "cook in a bag" products. You know the ones I mean ? They come with a pre-packaged spice package and a plastic bag. You add the vegetables and the meat, coat them with the spices provided in the packet, throw everything into the oven proof plastic bag and then put the bag into the oven and bake according to the directions. They had one for "Beef Stew" in a bag and one for "Pot Roast" in a bag. I had used the beef stew one several times for venison so I thought I'd give the pot roast one a try using the g-hog meat. I have to tell you,, it came out absolutely fantastic. All I did was cut up the g-hog just like you were going to fry it, then I seasoned it, broiled it for a few minutes in the broiler so it was browned on both sides..... popped all the meat into the plastic bag along with the vegetables, poured in the seasoning, gave it a few shakes to coat everything, then baked it according to the directions. The end result was every bit as good as the normal pot roast recipe I normally use,,, except using the bag/kit was 1/2 the work.
Anyway, hope this helps ya out... at least you have 2 dinner options to choose from.

Very nice shooting! I had that happen to me once. The G-hog crawled under the shed but did not make it down the burrow. It was a "pseudo-hole" that just led under the shed. He was just 2ft in and I felt him with a stick and pushed him/dragged him out.
Hey I bet its parents are not too far away. Keep an eye out for them. Also another G-hog should move in under the shed to claim it its own in a few days so be ready. Nice job!
