i was just taking aim at a English sparrow/ house sparrow, in my back yard... for some reason, iw as on 4x... i decided to crank up to 16x. after looking at the bird, i pulled my finger off the trigger... it wasn't a sparrow. not totally sure what it was, but not a sparrow... very simliar...
just a notice.. alll need to be sure what your shooting at!
i almost had a bad mistake!

you are so right, I believe in hunting animals but i want take anything that is to young or to small.

Yup, I made that mistake before. Took out a female house finch which looks sort of like a female house sparrow, except the chest area is kind of spotted with light and dark areas.

Yes sparrows can be tough to ID, The males are the easiest

i was "aiming" at the female something... it was nearly identicle to a female house sparrow, but different in the face... different beak.... was a skinny beak. thats what gave it up. still confused...... glad i didn't shoot at 4x....

It was probley a jenny wren a little hyper bird they have a longer beak than a sparrow but first off they look like a sparrow but you can usually tell by there quick movements to. thanks david

i'm almost certain, it was a female chipping sparrow, after looking at your pics. i do see carolina wren's all the time, i have a nesting pair in my eaves... but i let them be.

I can identify a lot of the non-HOSP's by behavior. Wrens, for instance, move very quickly hopping with their tails often held high. HOSP's almost never do that. Song sparrows seem to also show similar behaviors. That's saved more than one at 30 yrs.
