Hello all.
Been a looong time since I posted I know. I've been reading but nothing above expectation to report in many months.
Most of my recent work has been within the boundaries of expectation but today I exceeded it and MY own by a bit.
Garthton (as the oldies will remember) has had a recent influx of ground squirrels. They are tenacious diggers and move like crack monkeys until they stand up to survey the territory. At that point they are meaty targets of opportunity.
On Thursday I shot one at 52 yards with the Talon SS braced, bi pod-ed on my shooting bench in Bruceland while it was dining on tomatoes in Bruce's garden. Solid hit and impact noise but came up short on body count due to 3!!! tunnels dug in the tomato patch. Luckily, Sir Bruce was amused and greateful I was on task even though I could not produce a corpse.
Today I got real lucky and spotted a ground squirrel by Sir Garth's tractor shed at 5:15pm. I was in a hurry to get a shot off and after having lobbed lead at this guy several times in the past I was well versed in range, wind and trajectory. He was not.
I loaded a 14.2 Crosman Dome in the TSS and opened the sliding glass door to the back deck. I crouched because of tree cover and range and with a 6 mil dot adjustment for speed of pellet and range, sent the pellet on it's way with an additional 1/2 mil dot adjustment for wind. Admittedly, much to my surprise I heard the "thump" and witnessed the "stuck" critter tail twitch in my scope (X12 power)
I waited for about 10 seconds while loading another pellet but there was NO movement.
20 minutes later I was out with the youngest (Skylar) and we were looking for a corpse. We found him, laying over his hole 3 feet from the shed. He was very dead.
I picked him up and quickly figured out why. I hit him in the left front leg and the pellet traveled through his body and exited out his right leg above the knee. He was dead before he stopped twitching.
I was smart enough to measure out the distance on the way back to my door and by my step of 13/10 yards found it to be a full 90 yard shot.
Now, to be fair I've taken many shots at similar distances AND there was minimal wind at the time. Still, I was pretty proud.
I'd of taken a picture of him but the wife showed up while Skylar and I were putting on our sandals to go find him. I looked at him, Skylar noted he was a "pretty chipmunk" and I threw him into the nether world of woods behind Garthton.
All in all, a great reminder of practice at long range and a heck of a story for the "gun weekend" trip in Ohio.

Yep, I sure have Ed.
She is still alive and kickin' but Bruce and I were watching her a couple days ago and we both agree that she doesn't seem to be moving as fast as she used to.
We have no idea how old she is but I've got her pegged at at LEAST 5 years old. She still brings in the gray squirrels too. They must think that blondy is a hottie. Over the years I've made her a widow several times....

She's still around that's great considering her color or lack of. Wild Squirrels live about five or six year's so she's getting long in the tooth so to speak. Ed

Awesome 90yd shot with your Talon!!
I remember you posting pics of that albino squirrel 1-2yrs ago. They average about 6yrs in the wild, so she is getting up there.. I am surprised she managed to keep away from predators without any "camouflage" on her. Just goes to show you how well squirrels can adapt and survive even when they stick out like that.
