These are not Groundhog burrows which I am very familiar with, but are about 1/3d the size. They are deep and go sideways first, parallel to the ground you could say once the tunnel is about 2-3" below, and then drop down deeper. I put a 3ft thin wire in one, and I was able to put it all the way in and down with no problem.
There are 3 of them. They have a diameter ranging from 2.75" to 3" wide. They are not vole or mole holes. I know those well because we have them at work. Those are much smaller, about 1/2 the size.
Could these be chipmunk burrows? Does anyone know? or have any 3" wide holes in the ground? This is a new one to me. There is only 1 in the front lawn and to the side, and the other 2 are actually on the side of the house that has no windows. It's a typical High (raised) Ranch so the living room is there on that side and family room below - no windows so I cannot observe these holes without being detected. The 2 holes on the side are about 25-30ft from the house and the one in the front/corner of the house, about 40ft away. I am going to clear some vegetation that is blocking my view from the porch so I can see what comes out and goes into these holes. What do you think I am dealing with here? I am saying Chipmunks because the neighbor's tree fell down a few weeks ago that is just over the border of my property about 50ft away from the holes on the side lawn. He also cleaned up a lot of debris and the pile of wood that was back there, and I know Chippers have lived there for many years. I have also shot 2 Chippers since the tree fell and he cleaned up that area which borders my property. So I think the rest of the Chipmunks could have migrated to my lawn, but I am just guessing. I am not even sure if that's typical Chipmunk behavior. I thought they lived in hollow tree trunks or right under them, or in wood piles for protection from predators but I 've heard they are underground dwellers as well. Any ideas? I will try and take a pic of a hole.

sounds like munks to me, I have tons and the more I dispose of the more I get ( go figure ) anyway they dig holes every where and quickly too. Think of it this way they are great target practice, I got one off hand at 45yds with my maurader the other day.
If you can just watch the hole for awhile they seem to have routes the follow maybe you can figure out there pattern.

Sure sounds like chippers Harry, They are all over my yard and most are hidden in the grass. They seem to like areas where trees had been too even tho the stumps where ground out and covered with soil and grass planted. Also around bushes

Another thing to think about is Skunks digging for grubs. I had holes all over several years ago and spotted several skunks one night out in the field behind my place just a digging away. Ed

Thanks guys. Well this upsetting to me. I hope it's not skunks, because I 'm going to start shooting them again, and I really don't want to and can't stand the stink. What are munks?
Oh I almost forgot. There is a new hole about 3.25" wide only 15ft from the front corner of the house and parallel to the house, so I can't see it from the living room (front) window.
I checked out the holes late in the afternoon around 5:20 and they had increased in diameter! One was 3.5" and the other 4"!! Now I am thinking or hoping, they are Groundhog holes. Hopefully it's only 1 young G-hog or 2. I staked them out until 7pm from my porch after I cleaned some vegetation that was in the way, so I had a clear path to the bigger 4" hole, but nothing came out and no movement elsewhere. I am going to wake up early tomorrow to see if I can catch what's doing the digging. If I don't see anything all day tomorrow, I am going the setup the Ding Donger in front of one of these. These are smack in the middle of the lawn and it's p**sing me off. I 'm hoping it's G-hogs because I know how to deal with them and know their patterns and schedule, but if it's a night critter, it's going to be a little difficult, but I 'll get to the bottom of it. So far the holes are getting larger, and there is more dirt in front of them, so that's a good sign. It means whatever is doing it, they are not finished yet.

I don't think Chippers now, the holes I have theres no dirt around them ( or could be just that they are old ones), I know you will get to the bottom of it.

3-1/2 and 4 inch - they sound like they're too small for Chuck, or Skunk holes Harry, and too big for Chiper holes. Hope they're not rat holes !!!!
Sounds like a good place to set up the dinger donger, or a game camera !

Mystery is solved.. I think. You 'll have to read it in my other post. BTW, 4" diameter is not uncommon for a young G-hog but a little too small for an adult. These burrows get wider further in. That's just so a fox, small dog, or predators like a mangoose, Fisher and even possums, can't fit through the entrance. 3.5-4" is nothing for a skunk. I have seen skunks too many times at night squeezing through a 2.5" opening in my fence. That's between 2 steel beams. Between the metal door post and the one that supports the adjacent chain link section, so that metal doesn't budge. The skunks squeeze their bodies to at least 1/2 their size/width.
