Coyote - not exactly the way I had planned

On my usual routine of checking the video clips on my trail cam, one of the clips showed a very short clip of a yote. The yote just barely stuck its head into the cameras view. The interesting thing was the time. 6:30pm. No one was at home then. Here's the short clip.
2 days later the same yote came back. But, this time it came back in the morning (around 8am). This clip was taken about 21 minutes into the yotes visit.
The coyote hung out for a good 20 minutes before it taking off. As much as I wanted to try blasting it right then, I decided against it. I figure I would let it come back a couple of more time (so that it wouldn't be so wary). After watching all the video clips of this coyote (and the past coyotes), I noted that the yotes start off very nervous and move very jerky, quickly, and erratically - meaning hard to hit. They start off by grabbing the bait very quickly and taking off. But, after 20 minutes they start to relax. To increase the chances of hitting the yote, I want that yote to eat like a domestic dog (put that head into the food bowl and keep it there).
After the yote took off, I figured it will come back in a day or two. It came back 12 hours later - setting off the motion sensor. But, it set it off only once and after that I heard nothing. But, I heard quite a bit of yote yipping that night.
Here's what I saw the following morning in my backyard:
I was kind of surprised because one of the dirthole sets actually snagged that yote. I didn't think it was going to work (since I have heard how hard it is to trap coyotes). The info in the books and videos about coyote trapping were actually useful!
The yote was frantic when I went over to it and took the photos. It would not stay still. The only time it stood still was when it saw me walking away from it. But, if I stopped and looked at it, then it would go frantic. Dispatching the yote was unpleasant and difficult. The sucker would not hold still. I used the 25 MRod (26 grain Polymag, shooting 44 fpe) at distance of 20 yards. My target was the top of its head. The 1st shot missed and grazed it lower jaw. That did not even phase the yote. It just kept moving like crazy. The second shot (also aiming for the top of its head) also missed because the yote moved. The 2nd pellet hit the yote right straight in the front of the chest. If I were using a .223 or varmint rifle, that would have been an instant bang-flop. Instead, the yote was not even phased. This was getting bad. I did not want to this be a long drawn out process. And I really did not want to resort to the baby seal cub baseball bat maneuver. Luckily the 3rd pellet hit it mark. The yote instantly dropped. It only quivered its nose and lips as the blood poured out of the forehead entrance wound.
After the dispatch, I had a good amount of time to inspect the yote. It was a young female - nicely furred. No mange. I looked carefully at specific target locations (for nonbigbore air rilfes). My thinking is that the head is it. Top of the head and between eye and ear. Shooting the top of the coyote head is a lot like shooting the top of a coons head - only the yote won't hold still as long. For the side head shot, there's a nice flat spot right in front of the ear (slightly above a line drawn in between the eye and ear). The object of the side head shot is not to shoot too low or you'll end up hitting part of the mandible. Shooting a little high may result in a ricochet or glancing shot. Basically for head shots, the pellet really only has to penetrate maybe 2 inches.
I also looked at the yote's neck. Beneath all that fur was a solid and well muscled neck. Going for the neck shot means going for the cervical cord (paralysis). I've done it once and think its possible to do again (with a high powered PCP).

Nice Job on trapping that thing
When I trap I use my .22 LR pistol or an old 4 foot hickory club
Good shot and nice fur
Tan that thing up and make a nice wall hanger

Nice job! They can be hard to trap at times with their good noses and all. I would like to see pics of the pellet to the chest and head after you skin it, which I hope you did.

Sometime, these things don't go according to the way you would prefer.
At least you took care of it properly.
Should make for a good pelt, though.

Wow, glad you finished it off. The trap was a surprise at the end.. You have the whole place booby trapped!
I wonder if it was out there trapped all night and just kept quiet about it, so it wouldn't wake anyone up. They are extremely cautious of course, and the video shows that. Red fox acts the same way. They take a piece and go eat it in the bushes or somewhere very dark, then return for another without holding still. It took several days for the fox to get more "comfortable", where it would eat in one spot and not move as much.
The 3d shot was perfect btw. That's where I aim with raccoons and up.. There have been a couple of Coyote kills posted here in the past with .177 & .22 Springers with that same exact shot placement. Yep, their necks are surprisingly muscular - most likely developed over thousands of years to hold and drag larger (deer) prey. Red fox is the same way. That is a nice coat on that young yote.

Good shot placement on that last one too. If I didn't kill em the first 2 I probably would have walked up and set the muzzle on his head, depending on how well the trap was staked. LOL You got it done though!

Skin it, post pics of wound channel, and remaining pellets parts. Have the pelt mounted but don't sew up the hole in the head. Leave it for all to see.

Thats a good kill on a very elusive quarry. I bet you were pretty excited to see her trapped but that final shot was right on the mark. Congratulations.
I always thought the native American headdresses made from coyote skins were nice. Something like this, though this may be a wolf skin.
