Ideal optic for iguana hunting 10-40 yards .22 Gamo Swarm?

Hi all,
I have decided to upgrade from the stock optic on my Gamo Swarm Whisper. The thing not worthy and does not hold zero, it requires me to have to zero it regularly, it's very frustrating.
I hunt iguanas on my and neighbors properties. I prefer to be 20 yards or closer, but it's not always possible. Max shots ever would be around 40 yards, closest would be around 8-10.
I am considering a few things. First, I have a red dot sight, a Sig Romeo 5 on my ar15 which I am thinking about buying a picatinny mount for my gamo and trying it on there. Thoughts on that?
Second, if I do get a scope, I was thinking about the UTG Bugbuster 3-9x32. However, I honestly don't understand how variable zoom works. Can I zero this thing at 3x and at 9x? Or do I have to calculate holdover? Thanks.

With the Bug Buster, and any other A/O scope you will have to calculate and confirm holdover, To avoid this either go to a fixed power scope with a closer range set objective eg. 30 yards, or a first focal plane A/O scope, where the recital remains the same no matter the magnification settings.
Not sure if the red dot you have will hold up on a break barrel, and I find them not as accurate as a scope for longer ranges say past 20 yards.

With my Diana 350, I came to the conclusion that I also have to invest in optics, and I needed a learning curve with scopes.
This link can help -
https://life.hawkeoptics.com/riflescope-alignment/
I also downloaded the Hawke ChairGun software to learn the best distance to zero. People here can help if you need.
Since there's always a question whether the inconsistency is coming from the shooter, I've taken an approach to actually may see if the scope is holding zero (for the recoils of a certain rifle).

After trying various combinations, my latest version for 'resistance' is a Hawke Airmax with a 30mm tube which supposedly has internal space for bigger and stronger parts. Also, to add 'some' protection it's with the DM70 dampa mount from Sportsmatch.
