Mongolian BBQ starling stir-fry for dinner tonight
« on: May 04, 2021, 12:49:18 PM »
I usually only see one or two starlings at a time on the martin houses, but this morning there were three....all at the usual starling time, which is between 0900 and 1000 in this area. It was a very windy morning, and I suspect Augustine (the R10) may be shooting a little high, because one of them was a mouth shot (probably just happened to shooting at the precise second he was calling for females with his beak wide open)....Or I suppose it could have been the wind conditions, but it seems the kill shots were consitently high.
1 frontal chest shot also hit a little higher than I aimed for, and the side shot I took hit high as well, probably causing an instantaneous paralysis from a low spine shot.

2 males, 1 female

I skinned and removed the breasts on the starlings and will cook them with Chinese-style vegetable stir-fry on rice this evening, and use a Korean BBQ bottled sauce.

Imo, that isn't needed. I love starling breast as it comes off the bird. It is a very fine textured dark meat with a mild flavor....just a hint of liver flavor. If it was a large cut of meat, I wouls cut across the grain and grill it like a filet mignon.

If I had a lot of starlings, they would be a significant part of my diet!

Lizzie were you shooting upward at a steep angle? If shooting up at an angle greater than about 65* you have to aim a little low, if not that, then either wind, your zero, or range was off a bit. Good shooting and enjoy your dinner.

I am always shooting up at an angle to kill starlings. My houses are 14 to 15 feet above ground level, and I am shooting from around 4 ft....distance averaging 75 feet.

At that distance, I don't think it's the angle then, that may have been only about 15*.

Nice shootin’, nice breastin’, nice recipe’in!

I was taught that shooting upwards at 45° meant I should aime at the birds’ feet (although of course distance has a lot to do with actual POA). But if you regularly shoot at the same birdhouse heights from your same aimin’ spot, then that wouldn’t be a factor.

So I was gonna suggest maybe there’s a slight adjustment needed since springers are evil (😅), but then I realized you were shootin’ the BSA R10 (it’s a PCP bottle gun, right?) so that couldn’t be the cause...

All just to say - sorry Liz, I’m not much help...🤷🏻‍♂️

Lol Charlie!

Your point about angle is correct....it is the same I always shoot in this particular location. It was an evil springer, though...Beeman R10. It isn't the gun...i would almost guarantee. I really do think it had something to do with wind. But will need a calmer day to determine that. Either way, it is fixable, and I will still be shooting and eating statling! 😄

The wind has died down this afternoon.....shot this one a few minutes ago at 75 feet, 1" dots.

Hmmm, that don't look high to me...

It isn't. It's pretty much spot on, about 1/4 inch to the right.
It doesn't make much sense to me, but the wind is the only thing I can attribute it to, but then it could have been that I was just having a crappy morning shooting.

Couldn’t have been that crappy, you got bird meat in the pan.  ;)
