Rats continue to thrive

more rats continue to lurk around this farm.
I was able to tag 29 and collected 22 rats. My trail cam captured two coyotes taking turn cleaning up the dead rats.
enjoy.

Great shooting of them dirty Rats,
on the yeller dogs, you have 2 different groups of yotes there, the female is the dominate one,
the bushy tail is another clan, they tolerate each other EXCEPT around the den, with pups in the ground etc.
It won't be long before the female brings the pups to the food cache, (about 4 weeks), then it's fun to watch the pups.
You also have something slightly spooking them, you can tell via their actions, it is towards the camera/light area,
may be a strong human smell, or the camera/light it clicking etc, something is there or around they don't like.

@Nvreloader. Thank you. How could you tell that they are of different clan? My guess is he was very cautious with her and didn't want to be in her way. I guess if they are a couple or family as I had originally thought, then they would be a lot closer to each other, correct? It would be cool to see if she would bring her pups out to hunt as well. Ya, I don't know what she was spooked about. My camera is directly in front of the dead rats pile. The direction she was looking at was towards the two barns. No idea what she was afraid of. oh well, mystery remain unsolved, lol. Thanks for watching.

You can tell they are familiar with each other, lots of tail wagging, sniffing etc, just like a pair of house dogs brought up together etc.
Strange singles are thought of as prey to their pups, stiff legged walk, tail position, barring of teeth (grinning lol).
It is NOT uncommon that there will be 2 females and a single male around the den, (den mother to the pups) etc.
As soon as the pups are old enough to follow, she will be bringing them to the bait site,
the pups will camp there and have a play ground around the bait site, grass trampled down,
chewed brush, sticks/bones etc.
I'll tell you one thing,
she will NOT tolerate a lot of human smell around, best to wear rubber boots, and gloves when in the area,
rats picked up with the tongs, dumped into the bucket, then bucket dumped into bait site, and leave a quickly as possible.
Camera is set up a couple of feet AGL (above ground level), handle only rubber gloves, could be the smell that they spooking from etc.
Does the farm have dogs around, barking etc?, that WILL set them off in a heart beat.............
They will NOT TOLERATE any other canine around and will kill the trespasser, in a heart beat..........
I have had my Aussie's (trained trapline dogs) chased into my legs and had them male/female within 5-6' of me,
wanting to get it on with the Aussie's, more times than I can count..............
Very remarkable Crafty Critters, I have a lot of respect for, but that don't stop me from blowing a hole in them
when I get the chance............ over 24000+ in 7 years........according to my last tally book, working USFWS/ADC....

Nice rat shooting Plink!
On those coyotes, are you allowed to shoot them? Or are you content with letting them be your regular cleanup crew?

@Nvreloader. Thank you so much with the insight. I do use tong to pick up the rats and collect them into a bucket. There are no resident dogs in this location but the farmer would bring his dogs over from time to time. I will continue to set up the trail cam whenever I get a large quantity of rats and hopefully to capture other coyotes if possible. Thats a lot of coyotes you have tagged! Good job.
@kbstingwing. Thanks. It happens to the best of us to miss sometimes.
@mrbulk. The farmer hasn't given me the go ahead to tag them coyotes. So for the time being they will do the cleanup for me. Although I am looking forward to tag another one (#4) some day.
thanks for watching and input.

Ok Plink
There is the clue I was looking for.
You set up the trail camera each time when you dump the rats,
lots of human smell on the camera, and from the photo/video's shown,
the camera setup is upwind of the dump site, it is normal that during the night,
the winds drift/blow down the hill, cold air sinks, as you can see their reactions,
when they lift their heads and sniff etc.
If possible, can leave the camera set up and just quickly check the card for photo's,
leaving the least human smell possible on or around the camera.
You might get some good day time photo's, as you don't know what is showing up,
to check the free food left etc.........
