So basically PCP airguns fall under the 2" x 2' exemption and don't have to be hydro tested.
I'm curious how many guys here have their homemade air cylinders tested before they air it up?

I don't worry about them too much, but I do respect them. I do fill my two CF tanks to 310 bar, but will stop short of that if traveling with them in the summer heat to allow for expansion. These tanks were purchased used, but had current hydro inspection stickers epoxied in. They both are expired now, but I don't worry with that. I do handle them with care though and inspect for any bulges or gouges that would warrant them to be drilled and tossed. I never assume all is well when dealing with HP, this includes the hoses and connections as well. I guess my biggest fear would be getting a serious whipping from the 5' hose whip. I secure that hose good before filling.

I had a male/male coupler let loose at 4k. It was like trying to catch 2 mad king cobras. It took the high end seals out of my MKII compressor but other than that all it did was ruin a perfectly good pair of underwear...
I got the compressor shut down and then had to go in deep to get to the tank valve.

I think the smart ones start by using a higher factor of safety than airgun manufacturers do, to cover for the unknowns. After watching and digesting Lloyd's pressure testing videos:
When it comes to qualifying air tank designs, materials, parts and manufacturing processes, Lloyd on this forum has performed several hydro tests on air tanks, to destruction. So, not just checking to see if a tank survives 5/3 times the rated working pressure, but determining at what air pressure each part of the system actually fails. For instance:
If the above videos were interesting, Lloyd has
more strength testing videos
, about much more than air tanks:

owning a paintball field and pro shop we fill to 4500 PSI or 310.264078 bar on a daily basis . on Saturdays I may fill 150 cylinders to 310 bar and have been doing so for 22 years. never had a single issue.
As long as you follow the proper procedures you should be fine.
Hydro dates are there for a reason. the tanks degrade from the inside out. That carbon fiber bottle is Aluminum then wrapped in fiber.. Moisture from the compressor (if not properly filtered) collects in the tank and corrodes it without your knowledge.

Late to the party and certainly didn't read everything...
Has anyone been hooked by bad technique while fly fishing? Not much fun depending on where it gets you! Same can be said for bait casting, "dang" dangerous sport!
But I also ride (maybe rode but that's a longer story involving a drunk driving) motorcycles, 125cc up to my full size Harley touring machine with sport/racing bikes in the middle.
The only thing this brings up is why don't PCP cylinders need to be hydro tested or replaced regularly? Is it a volume issue where the smaller volume is considered "not too damaging"? I'm sure most of us have seen videos of people launching gas cylinders like a projectile (on purpose or accident), Mythbusters comes to mind for a quick reference. Fire extinguishers do a similar thing if you chop the valve off the end (basic water rocket concept).
That said, I've thought about wrapping the bottle on my Kral with something to help protect it from damage. The cylinder on my Bulldog is enclosed in the foregrip so should be well protected. Both live in a padded bag which isn't as good as a hard case, but probably OK.
An yes I have had a fill whip let loose, I didn't have it snapped all the way on the fitting and it got up to about 150bar before it let loose. That was slightly scary! I will say that during the filling stage is the point where I do worry the most, there are many things that could fail. Otherwise I'm only up to 200 bar and I don't think 300 bar would change the way I feel, both are probably just as deadly in a catastrophic failure.

I had a loose grub screw that holds my bolt tight and instead of the bolt staying locked closed on my .357 it caused the bolt to be thrown open while shooting yesterday and the resulting air pressure going the wrong way blew apart the magazine and threw the shrapnel and 4 slugs over my right shoulder just past my cheek. After checking to make sure I wasn't shot I checked to make sure I didn't need new underwear. Even a little bit of the air at that pressure can do enough damage to scare you pretty good, especially when it is coming at your head.

I will add that even though I say I don't worry much, I don't hold a party around the filling of a tank. I set a stopwatch and go hit the drain roughly every ten minutes with a quick check of the compressor temp. Close to 4500 I wait for the auto shutoff to kick in. Otherwise I am some where's else and not in the garage.
