So, if you ever see an open face pocket watch with the stem at 3 o'clock, you will know that the watch was originally in a hunter case, probably solid gold, which the owner sold for gold content and placed the movement in a cheaper open-face case.

She had several watches that she said he had tried to wear or had just held and they were all dead. You could move the gears and the hands but they would not run. She also said some electric lights would flicker off and on if he stood to close to them. I've read about people like that but have never witnessed it myself. My grandfather could not wear a wrist watch for the very same reason, and super glue also would not stick to his skin. The super glue thing is probably just from the particular oils in his skin, but the watch thing may have an extraterrestrial cause.I was always told of a story from his youth, he was riding his bike home from the theater one evening when he was surrounded by a green light and the next thing he knew he was home in his bed the next mourning.Well,ya know,LSD will do that to you.🤪. j/k

Interesting thread. I inherited my great uncle's pocket watch. He retired from the rail road in the Thirties. The watch was made by Illinois Watch Company. It is in a solid gold hunter case, winding dial at 3 o'clock. Still runs. Beautiful watch. I have it stashed away.Serial number indicates it was made in 1879, 10 years after the company came into being.
No, but I would like one. I probably wouldn’t carry it much though even if I did have one. I’m just not the type to carry gear with me everywhere. I pretty much have a pocket knife, wallet and phone along with my wedding band. I don’t like wearing a watch at work, on my wrist anyway. If I do carry a watch to work I fasten it to my right front belt loop. Easy to access and doesn’t get in the way.I have one “nice” watch given to me by my wife for a birthday many years ago. I wear it when we are going out or I know I won’t be getting it banged up. It’s a Citizen Eco Drive. Stainless steel. I love it!

Somebody else said the cases were “solid gold” probably meaning they weren’t plated. That doesn’t however mean they were 24k. Most likely 22k with some copper mixed in for toughness and erosion protection. That’s what gives Eagles and Krugerrands the slightly pink color.
The Waltham I have (open face) I thought to be Silver; the watch IS kind of heavy. It turns out to be a Nickle finish . Silverine
Thanks to the band breaking on my Timex wrist watch and this thread.... I have again been carrying a pocket watch. I do not want to chance damaging Dad's or my Great Grand Father's so I am carrying the old faithful Westclox Scotty. I don't have a fob or chain so I used a beaded chain and karabiner and it is amazing how many people comment they do not know that little pocket in your jeans is really designed for.
