My grandpa carried a pocket watch all of his life. He only stopped when he retired. He would let me wind it and listen to the tick of it also. After he died when I was 16 yrs old my dad gave me the watch. The watch has a strange story behind it. While in WWll my dad was friends with a young man from New Mexico. When he joined the army his father gave him a pocket watch to carry, when my dad got shipped home he gave my father the watch. My father gave it to his father because it had a train on the back and he worked for the L&N railroad. Then it was given to me. Last year 2019 on December 7th I gave the watch to my granddaughters with instructions that some day it and the whole story( I gave you the condensed version) be given to one of my great grandchildren when they are old enough to appreciate its meaning. If you take the back off your watch it has a serial number. On the Waltham website you can look up approximately when the watch was built. The one they have was built between August and October of 1891. The watch will be 130 years old this year and still runs and keeps perfect time. I bet in 100 years you won't be able to find another brand of watch built today that is doing that.
My body electricity would magnetize the old style 'spring and gear' watches in a matter of days. I am okay with the electronic pocket style watches. Same thing with a wrist watch!

I used to, now I still kind of do, it's called a Galaxy S4 Mini
My father left me his.Elgin, B.W. Raymond pocket watch. Railroad approved. 8 adjustments- 21 jewels. 10k gold.Made in later part of 1949.
I don't remember my mom's father, he died when I was very young but my mom swore to me that if you handed him a watch within a minute it would stop and never run again. She had several watches that she said he had tried to wear or had just held and they were all dead. You could move the gears and the hands but they would not run. She also said some electric lights would flicker off and on if he stood to close to them. I've read about people like that but have never witnessed it myself.
