My 1st hunting thread on the new forum, yeahee!
I could not believe my luck again this afternoon. As I was taking a break from work I spotted another young G-hog that had moved in under the shed, probably yesterday or this morning. This one was from a different litter and a little older/bigger but still about 1/2 the size or a typical adult. The upper part of its body and head were full of white hair and it looked like it had a white head from afar. I remember shooting a couple of big "white ones" last summer and in '08 as well. I am glad those older gene G-hogs are still around somewhere and reproducing.
So I was watching the young G-hog which had stuck its head out of the hole on the opposite side/corner of the shed (exactly) 22yds out which faced away from the house, when 1/2 dozen Grackles landed 35-40yds out. I had the RWS 850 .22 under the window up against the wall so they probably didn't feel threatened because they saw no gun. A younger Grackle started walking towards me so I made sure I didn't move. When it got to around 27-28yds it turned around to see why its parents were screaming at him to not go any further. That's when I rested the 850 on the window sill and got the young Grackle in the crosshairs. It was still facing away and slightly sideways, so I put the crosshairs on its back and squeezed. The 14.3gr Superdome got it right in the middle of the back, breaking one wing as it exited. The Grackle dropped and never moved.
The G-hog now had retreated its head and probably back down the burrow after the "bang". I had no shot on him anyway when I decided to shoot the Grackle, and could only see from its eye to its nose. About 15min. later the G-hog reappeared and seemed to be looking straight at me as I made a movement to prevent a mosquito from entering the room. I froze and it stared at me for like eternity. Finally it turned its head 3-4min. later and I stepped back from the window and got the Condor .25 cocked and loaded with a JSB 25.4gr King pellet. I return to the window and the young G-hog had now stuck its head out more from the neck out. It was still not completely broadside so I put the crosshairs in front of its ear calculating the pellet would exit somewhere mid-way between eye and ear on the other side taking out some of the brain. I held my breath and squeezed. I heard a loud THWAK and the G-hog went out of sight. He must have dropped down into the entrance of the hole but I wasn't worried. 1-2secs later, I see it leap forward and propel itself completely out of the hole, which I have seen too many times. It's a reaction from their nervous system when fatally shot. Now I could only see the rear half as it had jumped out of the hole to the left behind the shed. It made one more push forward getting its belly red in the process, and then I saw the tail go up - always a good sign. Another 2-3 secs later it was on its side and had expired.
I went out and retrieved the 2 young critters for pics but there was a lot of activity in the neighborhood all of a sudden, and the neighbor across the street had started weed wacking on his front lawn so I left my guns inside and took the pics without the 850 or Condor which most of you have seen many times. You will notice the POI in front of the right ear, and the exit wound almost half way between the left eye and ear. The .25cal holes are easy to spot even among all the red stuff
Sometimes the POI is more visible in the pics than when I search for it parting the G-hog's long hair.
This was the 7th young G-hog from this year's litters. I always wonder where they come from, if there will be any more, and WHY about 75 out of 85 (now dead) Groundhogs have been attracted to my shed these past several years. I check all the G-hog holes on my property regularly and can easily tell if they are active because I put branches and leaves in front of them and inside the entrance. If it is used, within a day or 2 every obstacle that I put on it and in it will have disappeared or will lay a couple of feet away. G-hogs don't like any obstructions and prefer to decorate the burrow entrance themselves
None of the G-hog holes have been active all Spring/summer. They just came from neighboring properties straight to the tool shed. Must be a very attractive shed to them
PS.
It appears you can only post a maximum of 128Kb of pics, and for me that's only 1 pic. Do you guys use links to photobucket for multiple pics?

Thanks guys. I guess you can safely say I need this
I am too accustomed to shooting them for 10yrs now. I go through withdrawals after a week if I don't see or shoot one , hehehe. Still I did not expect 11 G-hogs this summer. I am glad I started the off-season with low expectations. I always try to mentally prepare myself in the event I run out of G-hogs for real. It will happen one day. The well will always run dry. I don't expect to have an unlimited supply of them, but it would be nice
I e-mailed Gene about increasing the max. file attachments size. I can only post 1 pic with a max of 128Kb allowed. I have my camera set all the way down to low-res., and the pics are still 100-120K. It would be too time consuming for me to re-size the pics with a photo editor.

harry create a flickr account upload your pics, get the link for the image then simply use the PICTURE URL HERE without the spaces. That way you won't need to shrink your images.

Thanks Famine! I was going to try this but haven't had time.
I upload all my pics to Photobucket, so all I do is click on "img" link in the Photobucket (for other forums) and it should work. No need to click on the GTA's forum's IMG button. Lets see if it works.

Hmm, maybe you got something there Paul. I think I will complain about the lack of coyotes and raccoons this coming season in the Fall/Winter, in hopes Mother Nature will take pity on me again? hehehe
Seriously though, in the Fall/Winter of '08-09 I could have shot a raccoon almost every other day (got 1/2 dozen) but gave a few of them a pass. They would come 2 and 3 at a time. Sometimes a female would come with a young one 20ft away hiding behind a tree and I gave her a pass. In '09-10, NOT 1 raccoon showed up.. explain that one to me. No good deed goes unpunished (?). But the red fox late in the season did make up for the bandits' absense

Hey Cody, how 've you been? I wish I could. I don't own a bow but I bet that would be very challenging. Are you going after the G-hogs this summer or did PA change the laws on you again?
Ed/Dave: I 've been using a paint brush, can't you tell? hehe. Since you guys are pro's on fake blood, why don't you post a DIY or give us some training? hehehe. I prefer nail polish. That is mine and Timmy's secret
Actually, that is the damage a .25cal projectile makes most of the time. I can't help it if it's too much red stuff or destruction. It is all el-naturale

Well, i've kinda been going after them G-hog...The land that i was on last year gave me the shaft this year and said bow only.. so... Don't understand why they wont even let a shotgun with birdshot, but... The land owner said that it was a new "regulation" that the "insurance company put in"... I got to talking to an older guy that i know about that subject (he just retired from that insurance stuff a few years ago) He said that even though he's been out of the loop for the past couple of years he's calling bull on that it was an insurance thats pushing for bow only on that land... So i kinda called it quits on hunting G-hogs this year, but the son got a nice bow since his old bow broke a limb... $1200 after buying a bow, and tricking it out with sights and such he's able to consistently hit an 11X11 inch box at 55 yards.. He missed one with the bow this year

Wow $1200! not worthy you can't hunt with an aigurn on that property any longer. Sounds like he doesn't care if the G-hogs are around.
