Shooting glasses needed for diopter sights ?
«
on:
October 17, 2020, 11:21:51 AM »
Hello all,
My first post on Gateway.
I’m 63, left handed, and wear progressive lens eyeglasses and new to diopter sights. Do I absolutely need to buy a pair of expensive shooting glasses to use diopter sites ? I would like to try three position 10 mt. rifle. Not in competition, just for fun in the backyard. I don’t have a match rifle yet. I would first like to know if I need to buy expensive shooting glasses. Could I just use tape and hold my glasses up off the bridge of my nose to use the reading glass portion at the bottom of the lens ?
I’m looking at the Crosman Challenger rifle. Can you use eyeglasses with the long black rubber eye piece shade on the rifles rear sight ?
Thanks for any answers !

(EDITED for clarification)
Mike,
While I don't have a Challenger, I do have a couple of target guns with Diopter sights and also have progressive Rx glasses.
When using match sights you are still looking at the target "bull" that is 10 meters away (focus on the front globe site) so your eye does not see the rear sight.
While every ones prescription is different, I think you should be fine with you current glasses.

One of the advantages of apperature sights is that they help correct vision issues through the "camera obscura effect". Just move your head back and forth until you find the correct focal distance for your prescription. This can make using the rubber eye piece difficult. I find that eye pieces are a PITA to use with eye glasses anyway.

I shoot recreational 10m freehand with diopter sights and bifocal/progressive glasses. I also have the standard rubber hood on the rear sight. (Avanti 753).
I tilt my head forward slightly and touch the nose bridge of my glasses to the edge of the rubber hood. This ensures I am looking through the top half of the lens, and consistent eye/head position every time.
No special shooting glasses required.

Soon, you will need cataract surgery and your problem will be solved.
When your doctor asks if you want near or far vision, answer far.
I wore bi-focals.
Now, just readers for reading and computer work.’
Open sights, peeps, scopes no glasses..
Just look through the peep (ignore it), concentrate on the front sight and the fuzzy target..

Thanks all,
Sorry for the newbie questions, but I never looked through a diopter sight.
Don’t you want to focus on the front sight ring, with the target not perfectly in focus but sharp enough to see the bull ?
If this is correct can I still use my glasses, and try to position my head so I’m looking through which part ? Close, middle or far correction on the lens ?
And if I can’t, or don’t want to use the rubber sight shade can it be taken off , or do you need to use it ?
Thanks!

I am sorry, you should focus on the front sight. (edited my original post)
Now the benefit of Diopter is you mind instinctively wants to "center" the front ring through the rear onto the bull.

Hoosier Daddy et. All,
Thanks for the clarification.
If you’re to focus on the front sight insert then I guess I should try to position my head so I’m looking through the middle strength of my glasses lens is that correct ? Or, in other words move your head up and down until the front insert is sharp and you can still make out the bull to center it in the center of the insert ?
And lastly do you concur with everyone else saying I can go ahead and buy the Crosman challenger rifle and use it with my progressive glasses lenses and not have to buy expensive purpose built shooting glasses ?
I hope so, because I really would like to get into 10 mt. three position shooting.
Thanks !

I haven't bought specific Rx shooting glasses since my days on the Skeet Leagues... but that was for the peripheral vision.
My bet is you'll be fine.

Thanks to all for the info I needed about using diopter sights with progressive glasses.
Looks like I’m good to go on getting the Crosman Challenger rifle.

So... completely off topic.
Do your research on the Challenger. There is something about the "T-bolt" that kept me from buying one. I dismissed it so long ago I do not remember the details.
Personally, for a similar price, I am waiting for the new SAG Beeman 1380 to come out.

The ambi T bolt is the main reason I’m going for it.
I’m left handed, a HUGE PITA for anyone into shooting. Thankfully for southpaws everywhere Crosman made the Challenger totally ambi. Stock and action. There’s no where else to go for us other then Olympic grade rifles that break the bank, at least that I’ve found for starters.

That SAG Beeman doesn’t have an ambi action does it ? Anyway, the pistol grip is for righties only. Can it be ordered with a left stock ? And it looks like it’s at least twice the price of the Crosman. A fine rifle I’m sure but to salty for me starting out.

And there you go. The 1380 looks a lot better then the challenger, but because I shoot left I’m severely limited in what I can shoot. Yes, I could work a bolt or side lever by reaching over or under but that’s not for me. And the 1380’s grip is totally no good for me. I’m so left eye dominant I can’t wink with my right eye. Oh well.

The Challenger has been out for a long time with many followers..
The Beeman 1380 hasn't even hit the market yet. So I will be a "guinea pig"
Your decision is sound.

Thanks for the vote of confidence !
The 1380 does look like a nice rifle. I’m sure once you get a few hundred rounds down the barrel you’ll let us know what you think of it.

I saw complaints about the T-bolt when I was doing research on tuning the Challenger for higher muzzle velocities. Basically the T-bolt us designed to work at lower muzzle velocities. At some point when you increase the muzzle velocity above 600 fps the bolt will recoil back into your face when you pull the trigger. Obviously this is not a problem at muzzle velocities that the Challenger is designed for. I boosted mine to 600 fps and left it there. Very accurate for shooting squirrels at under 20 yards.

If the 1380 does what it implies it will do, and IF it is accurate enough, it could be a game changer for the lower end of the precision field.
I don't know if the price will be low enough to get into the sportster category.
But the adjustable stock is precision, not sportster.
I checked the Pyramid site to see what is included with the 1380.
I could not determine if a diopter sight included with the rifle or not? If not, add another $100+ to the price.
