Title: Adirondack Sees RED
Post by: JimH on July 26, 2010, 10:21:21 PM
I returned Sunday from a week camping in the Adirondacks at a little known place called Wakely Dam near Indian Lake, NY.  The camping is free and the red squirrels are numerous.  I've been camping in this spot where I host an ultramarathon trail race for 10 years.  This is the first time I brought anything more deadly than a fishing pole.  The ranger has become a good friend and he was thrilled at the thought of me taking out as many reds as I could.

Final count before my Mrod bolt jammed was 4 reds and a little mouse.  Sorry no photos to share though.  I could have been much more productive but it was too hot and buggy to stake out a spot in the woods so I settled for taking only those rodents stupid enough to enter my campsite.  The buggers chewed two holes in my hard plastic cooler and devoured a soft sided cooler in broad daylight.  I got one varmint as he was dragging off my pepper shaker.  Now that I've confirmed so many Reds in one spot, I'll have to revisit the sites during the Fall.

Nice job Jim! Did you figure out what happened with the Mrod?

Way to go Jim!  Sounds like you found a "red haven".

Yeah why did the Mrod jam?

Well done! Glad to hear I'm not alone in the fight against the Red Menace!

Not sure why the Mrod bolt jammed.  I'm just guessing the CPHPs were loose enough in the mag that when I took an upward sloped shot somehow the bolt jammed against the side of a pellet as they slid to the back of the mag?  I've been busy posting results from my trial race so I have not had a chance to try the fix recommended by other forum members in my previous post.

One bit of fun we had with the Gamo was trying to skip pellets across the lake like a stone.  Not sure we ever achieved it but the sound of the pellet hitting the water sounded like a 22 in the night when it echoed back from the surrounding mountains.

I would not expect a Crosman gun jamming with a Crosman pellet, but nothing surprises me anymore.
