How are we to know when a thread has been moved??

At the top left corner of the screen you'll see "show replies to your posts".  You should find it easily enough that way.  Some moderators will flag a post as having been moved giving the url of the new location, but not always.

Normally, you will either get a pm to let you know, or (and I typically do this....) a notification within the thread, if I need to move it for some reason.

You can also click on your avatar and it takes you to your profile (or anyone else's for that matter)
Then on the left side, 3rd down is "Show Posts". That will show what you posted and where... clicking on it will take you there. ;)

But yes, there usually is a message on where a thread was relocated to.
