Title: Looking for information on two old Crossmans, One looks to be a Model Model 102
Post by: Adam L. on May 01, 2021, 09:24:51 PM
So i got these two airguns today at a sale, Paid $75 for the both plus a box of super old .22 pellets.

The first one i am pretty sure is a Crossman Model 102 since its a .22 with feed tube says the pat is from Oct, 28 1924
Seems to be missing a cam plate for the reloading mech and seems to have a leak or stuck valve as when i pump it hisses out from the chamber.

The other i am not sure seems to be around the same time as it uses a similer cocking mech but has no markings on it. Also the trigger is vary basic seeming....
Seems to be a .177 cal.

Looking for any other info on these, also looking for the cam plate for the first one....

Pictures of what i think is the 102:

The first one is a 102 if it is 22 cal.. Did you pull back on the cocking knob before pumping?
The second gun looks to me to be a Rochester.

Thank you for replying, The 102 is a .22 and if i pull the cocking thing before pumping there is a LOT more hissing, well more like its just pushing the air out.... O-ring maybe?

The other DOES look to be a Rochester! Thank you was so hard trying to figure out what it was!

Adam, it was no problem. I have had a dozen of The Crosman 100 series guns. All of them except the 103 and the CG. I think they are great.

The 102 has mostly flat seals. Not super hard to work on if you have the tools to remove the seals.
There are several folks around that will reseal it for you. Try Rick Wellnecker at Precision Pellets for parts of repairs.

The Rochester is basically a copy of the Crosman 100 series but from what I have read is harder to work on. I have never had one so cannot speak from experience.

Probably worth spending either the time and effort to reseal yourself or the money to have it done professionally.

The 102 also appears that it may be a pre-war model as the pellet loading mechanism looks to be made of steel and not brass which is found on post war versions. I did not notice any checkering on the stock which was found on the early models (1927-1930). I could not tell if the forearm was wood or rubber. The rubber forearm was introduced as the "Clickless" version in about 1938. However, wood forearms were also produced as well.

I have been researching the Rochester rifles in hopes of finding one in the future. Based on my initial research the Rochester can be challenge to reseal due to the pump tube being solderd to the air chamber. However, this can be overcome with Teflon tape during a reseal.

Rick at Precision Pellets is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to these great old rifles.

Again great rifles.

I missed in my description oh the 140, 1400 comparison- outward appearance the S&W 77A share similar design lines. The 140 and 1400 are not lever actions like the 77A.

However they do share the same flat top piston design found in many crosman rifles including the 101, 102, 140 and 1400 and may have some other parts/seals that are similar

The second gun is definitely a Rochester.  Mine has the name and address stamped on the barrel.  The serial number is on the front of the receiver, hidden by the pump lever at rest.

Disregard my post on the S&W 77A it was for a different discussion topic about vintage pumpers
