I originally posted this on the thread about my brothers R9. It looks like the thread has gone another direction and I sort of shifted to a D52 so,

1.- Remember springs grow "fatter" when they compress, both inside and outside.
Don't know what you define as a "Dutch-Slip", but a slip fit is really a loose guide in a springer above 5.5 ft-lbs.

First, thank you to all that replied .It turns out that I have an ARH spring coming for my D52. I will do a trial run on my D52 with a 4140 pre hard spring guide. Do I size the guide to the spring’s diameter when the spring is at its installed length, or do I add additional guide diameter preload-interference beyond that? Care to offer an opinion as to how much?
I noticed that aftermarket guides have the spring seat machined into the guide. If the guns spring seat wasn’t square to the bore wouldn’t it cause binding between the guide-spring assembly and the piston assembly? Should the actual seat be allowed to align itself in relation to the guide? Or perhaps the guide and spring seat could be constructed of individual components that are not actually tied together with the guide allowed to float on the pistons latch rod? Does it matter?
I am sure that this is all old hat but I am new to this and just trying to not reinvent the wheel.
Any and all insight or comments would be truly appreciated.
Thank you, Mike

The spring end should be square wrt the length of the spring. The part of the guide that the spring end butts up against should also be square. It's best to fit the guide to a preset spring (ie, spring has been fully compressed once) because ID will open up a bit compared to an unset spring. IIRC you want about 0.001 to 0.002 interference fit between the spring ID and the guide OD. I usually just have the spring available while turning the guide and start checking the fit around .005 interference. Spring ID can be slightly different at the two ends so don't get them mixed up! When you can twist the spring onto the guide with moderate pressure it's about right. Be sure and polish the ID of the spring ends (last coil) before fitting the guide. Springs sometimes have sharp end that can mar the guide when being twisted on. Slip fit on the guide ID to the latch rod.
