My uncle used to say "everything in life is a tradeoff", and you have to respect the truth of that.
So, if I were designing an airgun scope for myself here's how it would go, with the tradeoffs that work best for me:
1. Magnum Springer Safe. And warranteed too. Period.
An etched reticle sounds good, but my only requirement is that it be useable and durable.
2. 4-16x36. Yep, thats weird and I know it would be a bit dark at higher mags and low light. BUT, it would hold the weight down, gives a great range of magnification and in both cases you can simply dial down. Plus, good coatings would help the light transmission a lot.
Also helps to keep the scope low to the rifle. Too many airgun scopes are mounted on stepladders....
3. First Focal Plane and an MOA reticle. Why? Because I would love to simply know my trajectories and be able to see where I need to hold, without any mental arithmetic and regardless of current magnification.
And, a good MOA reticle calibrated to be correct at 6X/25 yards and 12X/50 yards would be a decent Plan B.
Honestly, we could have a pretty deep thread on reticle design alone...
4. Accurate Side Focus (for ranging).
Front focus is OK too, especially since it is reputed to be more durable. But having used SF on my CZ 457 VT, I'm a bit of a convert.
Has to dial down to 10 yards minimum, 5 would be better.
If SF, I would like for a medium side wheel to be available.
5. I like an illuminated center dot or small portion of crosshair, but I probably wouldn't make that trade if it drove the weight up very much....
6. Mechanical precision. Meaning, it tracks well, holds zero well, etc.
7. Convenience. I like finger adjustable turrets, Euro style oculars, and the Burris style of front AO ring that allows flip up covers to remain stationary. That kind of stuff.
8. Price - this is a tough one. If it were FFP, new reticle, etc as described above I would want it to street for $200 or less. If its just a current SFP model with a better reticle, then $100 or less.
I made my choices based on general use but very flexible. I suppose you could shoot an FT match with one though I've never been and I don't know the ins and outs.
A good start could be as simple as adding a clever MOA reticle to the current Hammers/Mantis 4-12x40 SFP scope.
So, what kind of setup would you all like to see available, and what drives your tradeoffs?

Absolutely bare minimum Aim Sports Alpha6 glass and it's daytime bright illuminated reticle.
March glass is ideal though then Nightforce then Zeiss then Kahles.
Turret Clicks at least SWFA even if I like Alpha6 glass better.
