Hi, everyone. I shoot pests - primarily Norway rats - with headshots, using a .22 Gamo Big Cat. While usually they jerk around for a few seconds before laying still, other times I’ve seen them actually just slump over Immediately, with no movement and no response.
I was wondering if anyone know what causes the different responses: twitching versus slumped and gone. Is it shot placement?
I can’t ask the rats what they prefer
But I prefer the slumped response since it’s quicker and cleaner and want to see if I can get that every time. Any ideas are appreciated!

Squirrels are the same. One thing for sure, a head shot will put them down on the spot. As for minimizing the death throws,... what part of the brain was most impacted and what did that part of the brain control? A little research might be required,... but it may come down to a front shot, mid side head shot, back head shot, etc.
I do not think that I would be that worried about it though. You are hunting and it is what it is. You are doing head shots. Well done, that is as good as it gets. Remember too,.. that pellet causes an expanding shock wave (think gelatin block, where the shock wave expands the material and then collapses back on itself), so even if not directly hitting the perfect spot, things are pretty well scrambled anywhere in the vicinity.

A head shot to the brain of any animal will often cause tectic response for several seconds. Shaking, twitching and leaping are common. A hit that severs the brain from the spinal process will not cause tectic response because the spine is disconnected and commands can't be sent to the limbs.

As Carter said above..a head shot that also severs the spine leaves no chance of the nerves firing. The only other shot that has given me no nerve response is a clean heart shot. Both are tough to do on a rat since they are almost always moving even just a little! A clean head shot still elicits the nerves firing but the animal is nonetheless dead. You’re lucky to get to shoot those huge Norway rats...I hope to someday get a chance at one of those!
