Hog trail.
« on: April 28, 2020, 01:50:58 AM »
Today I took my new to me used .30 Storm that I got just a week back for a long hunt up the mountains.

After many, many miles I come back down and planned to go sit in my blind for an hour or so to finish the day.

Once you get at the foot of the mountain is about 3/4 mile to my blind I use a Hog trail in the tall grass.

The wind was blowing pretty good strait from my right,

When all of a sudden I heard the unmistakable sound of a porker making it's way through the thick tall grass I could tell it was to my right and behind but couldn't tell how far or close.

So I just stud there listening and trying to get a visual, when I could tell the porker entered the trail and was coming towards me.

got the scope at the bend in the trail and waited, with my left eye noticed a dark shape approaching the bend so I got ready.

Consciously I would never take an off hand brain shot at a moving hog, but in the heat of the moment it's all instinctive.

As the porker rounded the corner the head was a bit higher then I like but not to bad, the crosshair was in position in a split second and the 44gr pellet was out.

Where she fell

You can see the bend in the trail just behind her

The shot was about 15 yards, offhand and standing straight up

Nice hog Manny, enjoy the BBQ
I have a question about the wild hog meat.

I do a lot of meat smoking, and often do some nice pulled pork. I will usually do a 10 to 12lb butt/shoulder roast (or 2) in the smoker, and it will be anywhere from a 8 to 12 hr. smoke.

I'm wondering if the wild hogs cook up about the same ?

Am I correct to think that they might have leaner meat than standard market pork ?

Do you ever do them in a slow smoker ?

Cheers

Thanks Ron, I never smoke it.

correct, wild boar is basically fat free.

I tenderize the meat by leaving it in ice water for 48 hours with a bit of Vinegar, I replace the water that gets bloody every 10-12 hours

Thanks guys,

This was a really diverse hunt, all day up in the mountains in relatively open grounds, lots of miles and seen nothing.

Then on the return in exceptionally thick ground it all happened, fast and with a good bit of hard adrenaline rush :) :) :)

Great shooting bruddah! Just last weekend I was 15yds away from a sounder that rolled in unexpectedly.

I counted about 5 males and three females...3 of the males were at least 110, females were roughly the same, with one possibly being in the 130lb range. They all stopped and looked at me. Then they proceeded to annihilate my bait station.

I think after the first minute and a half I remembered to breathe. I didn't take a shot at any of them...figured it would be best not to get them riled up. At least, not at 15yds and out in the wide open.  :o ;D

The other day I was in the woods so I checked out the skull,

Not bad for an Offhand shot standing straight up on a walking porker :)

Yes, wild hog smokes up wonderfully. This past week,  we smoked a whole shoulder for 10 hours. It was awesome pulled and put on buns. It was from a sow, so there was enough fat to add a nice taste and keep it very moist.

Does the vinegar get rid of boar taint? I've heard apple juice or orange juice works well for that.

I saw a group of at least 10 right by the road last night as I drove by them. I could have easily killed several but I drove on home. This morning I saw they tore up 100ft of ground by the road there.

Congrats on the good shot.
