How hold sensitive is the RWS 48/52
«

I currently own a Benji NPXL 1500 in .177. I have learned to shoot it well around 1/2" groups at 20yds with 10.2 or 10.5 dome pellets. I also shoot in a 20 yard freehand league and managed to win this year. However I am considering a new RWS 48/52 in .22. My only real concern is that my NPXL is an absolute bear to tame and really want something I can just pick up and shoot. ( Well maybe not that easy) I am considering a PCP gun but I hate the fact that I would have drag around a pump or a very expensive air bottle so I am really leaning toward a side or bottom cocker. So can anyone tell me how hold sensitive these guns are?

their not really that hold senitive but do require technique to shoot well, I've noticed these rifles like to be held up by the stock screws for the best accuracy other than that no problems, the 460 is a little easier to shoot than 48/52 JMHO

I agree. My JM VRT Tuned 52 shoots great held or bench rested. I hold it close to the stock screws and have got .170 CTC groups.

My 48 .22 is still 100% stock (not for long) and I have to say it is the least hold-sensitive Springer out of the ones I have owned (stock guns, not tuned). Much less than my 350's, and I have owned 3 of them. The 48 was very accurate out of the box. I must say I was impressed. I was getting ragged hole groups with open sights at 21yds using CP's which it likes the best. Now that I have it scoped, I get a little tighter groups, but if I try to hold it too tight, it doesn't like that. With light to moderate grip, it does fine. It is also a pretty heavy gun so that helps too. I got a couple of squirrels with it on open sights before I scoped it (w/a single shot). One of them I was shooting completely off-hand standing up at 25yds. I find the 48/52 is easier to shoot off-hand too... compared to 350, 34/36, etc.
After 500-600 shots, the velocity is still climbing on mine. It is now up to 818fps with 14.3 CP's (from 790's) but I think it is finally settling down. I get very small SD #s, around 3-4fps through the Chrony with most pellets I have tested, and the ES is never more than 8-9fps. So this 48 shoots very consistently.

I havent noticed my 48 to be hold sensitive at all. Maybe it is and I just havent found the wrong way to hold it yet.

hehehe rich...nice!...i just came in from shooting my RWS52 and its a great gun. i could bench shoot with it all day long but theres "stuff" blocking my bench, so i decided to shoot standing. and after 20mins the gun became hold sensetive because i have a huge scope on a heavy gun lol. my little girly arms could not hold this air canon up anymore are started pulling shots(operatior error lol).....mine is bone stock(for now) and it shoots great!....48-52-54....just get a "beat down" rated scope.......bart

My 52 in .22 is the most accurate rifle I own. (Out of the box) No hold sensitivity and not as pellet fussy as some of my other shooters. It is a heavy rifle. I prefer to shoot freehand. I plan to place a peep sight on it soon. With all that said, I shoot it the least of all my rifles. I typically can get a one ragged hole accuracy at 20 yards. I need to practice alot with my other AGs to even come close to the 52s accuracy.

Thanks guys' I appreciate all the input. As far as being heavy, I'm good with that. I have been trying to master the Benji NPXL 1500 for the last couple of months and just I thought I her figured out, she went all woman on me. It' pretty heavy and seems to be very hold sensitive. I have moved the rest off the bench to every possible location on the forearm and it shoots OK! 1/2" @ 20yds but I am constantly adjusting the scope from bench to freehand and back. Makes me nuts!!!!

My 48 .20 cal is still bone stock and it's not the least bit hold sensitive,, it's just "point and shoot".
I can't say enough good things about the 48. Nice and short, solidly built, seems to just naturally point on target, easy to install a sling, tons of power and great accuracy. Outstanding hunters.

I'm not sure what these others mean about theirs not being hold sensitive, but my 22 caliber 52 was very hold sensitive. If I bench rested it, I could not get tight groups at any reasonable distance (say 30 yards or more).
After I did a full tune with Jim Maccari VRT kit, it was much improved, but it was still hold sensitive. If I shot by laying it on a block of foam or a bunched up sleeping bag, I could get very tight groups, but if I held it or bench-rested it, the groups would open up.
Now my 54 is much better.
However, my 25 caliber Benjamin Marauder PCP will blow any springer away in terms of tight consistent groups - even out to 50 yards.
I just got the 22 caliber Marauder pistol and it seems to be very accurate too. I can get same hole accuracy (most of the time) out to 30 yards. However, it is a pistol and harder to shoot precicely than a rifle because there is ho stock to get a cheek weld, which greatly helps for precice shooting.

Ray,
that M-rod is my other option here. the only problem I have is the major inconvenience of air. ( pump it or fill bottle )
A. they get expensive
B. I would have to carry the air source everywhere I go
The reason I like the springer style guns is the simple fact I can one gun and a tin of lead go hunting or shooting.
My buddy has an m-rod and your right it is an absolute tack driver.

Some spring gun are very hold sensitive and it doesn't matter who made it, some guns are just that way, you take 2 guns right off the assembly line and they won't shoot the same one maybe be very hold sensitive and the other not at all. and usually what causes that is an imbalance in the rifle of some kind like a imbalanced piston or something like that. I've had guns like this same models one shoots super accurate and the other I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it no matter what I did to it!

Very often it is the piston seal which is not uniform, or cut properly to fit, or improperly lubed (or no lube/too dry), that makes 2 same model guns shoot differently, but it can be a lot of things. Piston seals have a lot to do with the shot cycle and accuracy (and scope killing too if the shot cylce is too harsh due to a "bad" seal). Another reason 2 guns can have different accuracy results is the the amount of torquing and vibrations in the gun caused by latteral movement in the spring and inadequate spring guidance. One gun can have very tight tolerances with everything aligned inside, and balanced as Mark said, and the other gun is "friction heaven" as I call it.
It took me about a year or more and a couple of Diana 350's, before the light bulb went off in my head that Spring guns. and most if not all guns under probably $1K are not "blue-printed" (and balanced). Therefore there can be many things "wrong" with them which explains why 2 guns of the same brand and model can be so different. That is when I was convinced of the importance and benefits of a good tune with better aftermarket parts.
