German AirGun Gate / Re: I have read the HW50 .177 vs .22 Thread Until My Eyes Crossed!« Last post by Bayman on Today at 11:08:50 AM »This is classic forum efficiency. OP, Between A or B what should I pick? And people answer C. Not that their wrong for trying to help or their answer is wrong. I've been guilty of it myself. I just think it's funny.
In response to the OPs question. Either 22 or 177 will work both have their advantages. 22 has better BC and will drift less in the wind and lose less velocity. 177 has more pellet choices, is flatter which reduces cant errors and in my experience 177 Weihrauch barrels are cut better. I'd pick 177. I've owned both 177 and 22 Hw50s. I sold the 22 because it was too loopy for my purposes which was mostly squirrel hunting and plinking targets at random distances. That has more to do with stuff you're not concerned with. The person I sold my 22 Hw50 will tell you it's "PCP accurate and the least hold sensitive springer he's ever owned ". He's owned a bunch of high dollar springers tuned by the best in the business. Including a 20 caliber Hw50. He's since gotten hooked on PCPs and sold all but three springers including his 177 and 20 cal Hw50s. He kept the 22 that I sold him because the gun wasn't a fit for me. This goes to show people can have different feelings about the same thing. In this case the exact same gun. That particular gun was very accurate but I've never gotten a 22 that'll shoot groups as good my 177 Weihrauchs. My 177 Hw97 and 95 still hold my best 50 yard groups. That's also over my 20 caliber R9 and Hw98 fwiw. As to a 20 caliber HW50 there isn't as much to gain over 22 in velocity because the larger 22 bore is more efficient and will make more power thus thus the velocities are very close. What you will gain is the 20 caliber barrels seam to be cut better and are generally more accurate than the 22 barrels that are more pellet size picky. There's basically only two 20 caliber pellets suitable for the HW50. The 11.42 FTTs and 13.73 JSBs. The JSBs will drop you into 22 velocities so that leaves you one pellet choice if you were trying to get more velocity than a 22. I'm sure I got your head spinning. I'd recommend you skip the 22 barrel lottery, the poor selection of 20 caliber pellets and go with the 177. You're more likely to get a good barrel and you'll have a ton of good pellet options. Pellet options are important when shooting longer distances because some pellets that shoot well at short distances destabilize and fall apart at longer distances. Especially at lower velocities. Another reason 177 velocities might be a better choice. To give some context to value of my statements, yesterday I was hitting a 4" plate at 95 yards with my 177 Hw50 with a 4X scope. I've repeatedly hit pill bottles at 73 yards with it as well. That said I don't shoot 50 yard groups with it because I have better air rifles for that. 47

In a perfect world you buy the gun in one caliber and then get barrels in the other two. You could then try for yourself. I originally got my .22 HW 50 as a backyard critter getter. Then I realized that .20 pellets at 13.something grains is just about the same weight as most .22 pellets(at least the ones that I would consider for the .22 HW 50). If you want a .22 caliber springer, I believe the HW 95 is better suited for that caliber. -Y PS an old sage at the range once told me that .177 pellets traveling slow had less wind drift than .22 pellets going fast. Not sure that is true, but..... 48
Spring/ Gas rams / I installed new spring in HW50S. It will not cock!« Last post by w9trb on Today at 10:52:46 AM »What is most likely cause of this. It is a fairly new HW50S as it has the anti-galling nylon piece on the cocking arm. I have only done one other air rifle and that was a Diana 34. That job went well and I figured this job would go fine, but no such luck.
