Im in Kane County, Pingree Grove to be exact. I purchased a Titan GP from walmart on impulse. Ive shot it a few times in the garage, but I live in a townhome and Im worried about going outside and shooting. Ive browsed ILs laws being that I own firearms as well. It seems air rifles are treated the same, so unless I have a yard where I wont have the cops called on me for brandishing a weapon it seems Im stuck shooting in the garage. Or perhaps taking it to the gun range with me. Where do you guys shoot?

That's good as my neighbors are good also. The one across from me has an empty lot and lets me set up targets in his lot.Get to shoot apx 40 yards this way.Works out great.I go to races and get him souvenirs and he lets me shoot!

I'm also in Lake County, on the north end of the state. Hello Tpatner412.

Hello bodybag0. Where do you shoot? DuPage county is pretty close. We might get together for a shoot some time, as well as Tpatner412.

This urban sprawl is killing me. All the fun outdoor things like shooting and dirtbike and snowmobile riding is getting harder and harder to do. We need to find some farmers who will maybe allow us to shoot on their property in exchange for cutting down on their pest/varmints.

Smaug,  You are correct about having open land to do all mentioned.  I shoot in my basement as little as possible.  I shoot at my buddies house which is down the street from me.  His yard back up to a county owned swamp Ton's of wild life and space.  I do most of the shooting at my parents house which all so has plenty of space.  With ease we set our targets to 35 and 50 yards.

A few months ago I was talking to Tim at Gats and he said they all go out once in a while to shoot on neighboring farm.

I'm in Kane county. I have a decent size basement setup where I can shoot a target at about 30 feet. I'm not comfortable shooting in the yard (and that would only gain me about 15 feet over my basement range). But I'm itching to take my springers and my QB78 outside.

If anyone nearby has a safe place to shoot - please let me know. I'll be happy to provide something to drink, some pizza or sandwiches and pellets.

Still nice down here and in mid 60s still.leaves are finally starting to fall so it makes good hunting.I figure i have a few more weeks left before its to bad down here to do much. So yea we will definitely have to work on next year! A bit of a drive for you all up there so we might have to do a stay over or something as i have plenty of room if interested! o yea one more thing, the range i belong to has an indoor shooting range for bows or airguns only and i believe its 30 yards but in the basement and warm!

ddgrego

Thats very nice of you to invite all of us to your range and hunting grounds.
I wish we had a little more time.  I got out today for 2 hours and had a great time.
But I'm really starting to get bumed that the season is all most over.

Post by: hogdog4953 on November 05, 2011, 10:00:24 PM
That was very nice. I think after this winter we should try to get together. I am still going to look for maybe an indoor range. I was thinking to look for maybe around an hours drive or so, try to bribe the owner or mangr. to let a few of us in after hours.

Hi guys,

I'm in a townhouse in Algonquin and the only shooting I can do is across the kitchen/family room which is only 30'. I have been looking high and low for an area to shoot or people to shoot so count me in for any get together. I'm also in the process of teaching my wife how to shoot.
Can't wait to shoot further than 30' !!!

Hello guys I live in Downers Grove (Dupage County) I have a nice pellet stop I made I shoot in the back yard all the time I have cool neighbors all around me. I have been looking for other AG shooters for a long time now. This web site is awesome. My parents also have a house in Indiana on a lake, that doesn't get used all that much I always bring my AG's with whenever I go up there. I'm in on any sort of meeting up you guys plan. I was also going to look around for some hog farms around the area in Indiana to try and find a place to kill some rats/pests.

Beemangh

I'm in Lombard and when its warmer out, I do most of my shooting during the day.  I have 300ft backyard and the neighbor behind me has about 300 ft too.  No neighbors on the west.  and the east is cool.  Theres lot of room but I still keep it on the down low because I don't need the hassle.
I have a bud in Downers too and we shoot at 30 and 50 yards.
look me up once the weather changes.

Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois
Post by: hogdog4953 on February 13, 2012, 09:30:24 PM
If I remember there used to be gun shows that had airgun stuff. Got to look into that also. An old coworker was into ags years ago and used to bring in some cool stuff but at the time I had a small child. Now it my turn for toys lol.
Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois

I've heard that on the DuPage County fair grounds is the place that house's a gun show once a month.

http://www.pvsashow.org/pvsamain.htm (http://www.pvsashow.org/pvsamain.htm)

I haven't gone to this show but my friend has been there and has seen and bought air gun stuff.   But its very limited on what you can get.  It's basicly a Firearm show.

I'm in Bartlett, near St. Charles. I have a FOID. Do I need a state habitat stamp to hunt on my property? What about off my property (if everything else is legal)?
Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois
Post by: Tpatner412 on March 15, 2012, 12:04:01 PM
On your property you really shouldn't need anything.  Off of it though you will probably need that and a "varmint stamp?"  Not sure if that is the proper name or not.  I have heard a few local hunters talking about it before but cannot remember exactly what it is.

I've only heard of a Small Game License (besides waterfowl stamps). It's been years since I bought one though.
Good to see some activity on the Illinois board !!

Post by: jglover on June 01, 2012, 01:48:29 AM
Any relatively firm plans for a fun shoot here in IL pending?  I'd be willing to participate but the locals here in Naperville are not much into having airguns firing off in their subdivisions. :) Right now, all I have is my garage or a road trip to the ISRA range where i have to compete with the PBs.

I'd be up for that without a doubt. I don't really have anywhere outside to shoot though either.

If anyone's up for shooting next week let me know.  The only catch its going to be durring the day from 9am to 2pm.
Monday - Friday.  I'm in Lombard and have room to shot up to 50 yards.  Send me a pm if your interested.

Very nice of you to offer. I'd love to go but I'm at work during most of those hours. I'm off early on Friday's but I couldn't get to Lombard until about 1:00 so not much time to shoot. Is a weekend shoot possible sometime. I know of members here in Streamwood and Park Ridge that might be interested as well.

I would but I'm going to Wisconsin next week camping and to shoot my PBs (Marlin 336 and Glock 23). Which AGs am I taking? The NP XL for dad and the 760 for my son. I'm leaving my best gun at home - the Diana 48. I don't want anything to happen to that one, the fraulein is a keeper!

I'm might have people over July 4th morning to my house in Bartlett. I won't know for sure until we get back in town on July 1st.

Originally from Southern Illinois, moving back in 2weeks, I hate the laws pertsining to airguns in Illinois, but I've had a FOID card since I was 16, and have several powderburners and do some gunsmithing but it's ridicoulous that they have limited the power for airguns there, I wish we could seperate the rest of the state from Cook county, I live 30 minutes from Kentucky down there so I drive across the line for my needs lol

Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois
Post by: Bullit on June 23, 2012, 10:56:21 AM
Jerry.  The Illinois State Police website has a posting of the laws.
IIRC, anything propelling anything under .18, at speeds over 700fps, is considered a firearm.  Seems to me that the stickler for them to nail you, is the speed...no matter the caliber.   I posted it last year, but can't find the link for you.   But I know you can google it and you'll be able to read it.   Hope this helps some.    Mike
Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois
Post by: Tpatner412 on June 23, 2012, 11:37:27 AM
Okay, just to clarify so Jerry does not freak out. The law says anything over .18 or shooting faster than 700 fps is classified as a firearm and therefore requires you to have a FOID card. Now the loophole comes in for those who buy a gun from a big box store, say a Gamo big cat or something. Then you only have to be over 18 to buy
Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois
Post by: Bullit on June 23, 2012, 12:07:23 PM
Here it is Tyler.   Note that these are for EXCEPTION, and that BOTH size and speed requirements must be met...

430 ILCS 65/1.1) (from Ch. 38, par. 83‑1.1)
Sec. 1.1. For purposes of this Act:
"Counterfeit" means to copy or imitate, without legal authority, with intent to deceive.
"Firearm" means any device, by whatever name known, which is designed to expel a projectile or projectiles by the action of an explosion, expansion of gas or escape of gas; excluding, however:
        (1) any pneumatic gun, spring gun, paint ball gun or
  B‑B gun which either expels a single globular projectile not exceeding .18 inch in diameter and which has a maximum muzzle velocity of less than 700 feet per second or breakable paint balls containing washable marking colors;

So, as I read it;  any  .177 @ 705 fps   is  able to be classified as firearm.
Also "Firearm" calibers .20,.22,.25 etc would be because they are OVER the limitation of .18

Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois
Post by: shawn67 on July 01, 2012, 10:18:38 PM
No Illinois is definately not Gun friendly, 1 of the last states still fighting for some form of conceal&carry, the airgun law passed right about the time I was going to be bying alot of airguns from Xisco and tuning them & trying to sell them at a resonsble price to have a hobby  I enjoy and still make a couple of bucks, but after they passed that law I may as well get my FFL, Chicago ruins it for Illinois gun owners, they need to divide the state around Springfield and have a Northern & Southern Illinois, then Southern Illinois would be great!

No, I work in Barrington and she is in Deerfield/Lincolnshire, or somewhere near there.

Edit: I used to work in the city a lot but that was several years ago.

Okay.  I guess moving out west would make her commute a long one.   My uncle lived in Hoffman Estates, and they moved out to the Hinckley area because the "build up" of the area changed it.  He commuted to Elgin.

New to AG.  Have not purchased my first.  I have always loved shooting.  I do a little with rifles when I get out to my inlaws in upstate NY.  However that is only when I get out there as I am in Algonquin.  Wondering if there is a range other than Gats anywhere around.  Also have to pick out something to shoot with.  I am leaning toward PCP, though it would take me a day or two to pump up a small fill tank.  Any recommendations on a good first gun?  Thinking about $300 for gun scope pellets.

Hey Tater, what side of the river are you on.  I am on the east.

shtr1,
I've been walking down the air gun path for awhile.  I started with  break barrel  springers.  Then I moved on to the QB 78 family. I have several side levers, I like that design concept.  I have a fine shooting B51.  Finally, I gave in and bought CMP used 853 Daisys for my family.

Had I bought a 853 first, I would not have bought  any of the springers for short range accuracy, nor would I be sitting on the QBs.  Once I discovered what air rifle accuracy can be, I demand it.   Well, I have purchased some disappointments.

My wife has about an acre of green grass in Cumberland County that we shoot and camp on.  We are in the middle of Illinois and we would welcome some of you town folks to come shoot with us.

Hi Paul,
I'm on the west side of the river, near Algonquin and Pyott roads. That's spooky that you have inlaws in New York, almost all of my relatives live there too. There is a range in Cabelas and also a new one in Crystal Lake called On Target but they don't allow airguns. I'd love to shoot with you sometime but I'm in a townhouse and can only shoot indoors. Maybe we should make a road trip to visit Bob H.

Sounds like a lot of fun.  I have not been fishing in a long time.  Have a few rods and stuff for that.  My wife would not care for the fishing part but I wonder if she would like plinking.

Right now I am still working on my first air gun.  I do have a hand gun that shot bbs, darts and I think it can do pellets.  Nothing major, just for plinking at about 20-25 feet and not very accurate.  First rifle is going to be a PCP with a scope and tank of some sort.  But that is a little ways off.  Hope to have one by late spring/early summer.  Currently shopping around.   Maybe in a year or two I will have a few items to list under my name.  ;D

tater,

Bring the wife along too.  My wife, Lilly will be there also. She can be mean with that 853.  The property has no utilities but, we camp there frequently with our teardrop camper.  Oh, there is a family pond nearby.  We be honored by your visit.

And thank you Bob H for the invitation.  I would like to come out at least for a Saturday to shoot.  Hopefully the weather will start to warm up some and we can set a date to have some fun.  Um this maybe a silly question but what is an 853?  Airgun I assume but is it a Daisy or something else and is it pump/gas piston/PCP bottle or tube?  Being new, I am just picking up the lingo.

Thanks all

It could very well be a great day.  That is what, a 4 hour trip from Chicago?  So about a 5 hour from NW suburbs.  I will put it on the calendar.  Gotta find out what else is going on in May.  The following Friday I am heading out of town.  Two weeks before that is Mother's day.  I will try to get all my ducks in a row by the 22nd.  That way I should not have a problem.

Thanks Bob.

Man I wish I'd remember to check the IL section more often....

I live in Plainfield(will county about 30 miles west of Chicago) and normally shoot at my buddy's house in Montgomery but I'm always looking for new places to go and new faces to meet and share this addiction with!

Anyone in the nearby area PM me and perhaps we can figure out a time to get together or possibly even make arrangements to share a ride to one of the other possible IL events....

Anyhow....please keep us all posted on possible dates and locations as I'm definitely interested in a fun shoot and getting to meet you all in person.

I'm not that far from you, I'd love to meet up with you sometime but I don't have anywhere to shoot outdoors. Hopefully you're going to the Toledo, IL shoot on May 23rd.

I might even be able to bring my dad and/or my shooting buddy. I really hope I can make it to meet everyone and show a little more support for our sport in this crazy anti-shooting state we live in!

Just out of curiosity what shooters are you all bringing? If I make it I'll have my trail xl725 and phantom and possibly a few others. Nothing too special but I like em

Also is there anything that I can bring to help out? Food, targets, pellets etc? Just want to make sure I can add to the fun and festivities

John,

This will be pretty laid back.  It will be the first AG gathering that I will have attended or hosted.  Please bring your favorite target and let us sling pellets at it.  If you want to bring a dish that's fine.  Bottled water would be fine also.  We will have a fire and hotdogs will be provided.  I'm hoping for a safe sun shining day.

To all,  If you travel with a powder burner, keep it under cover, I don't to see it or hear it.  My neighbors don't want to hear it either.

For anyone going to Bob's in May, please keep an eye out for election signs in your area. After the election, grab them for target holders. They are great for taping targets on 'em.
There's a local election in a town I drive through on the way to work. Not sure of the election date but I'll try to grab some after it's over.

X2 Jerry.  Those wire frames are killer for hanging targets on.  Tin can tops and botttoms are neat and cheap targets to hang.   Office paper clamps make great holders.  Make sure it's legal to get them, (tho I think that picking up "junk",  should be universally legal...LOL ),,,
but heck yeah they are great for clamping targets to. Enjoy ;)

I picked this up today from Cabelas with Cabelas credit card points for this weekend. It looks good in principle, but the weld spot the holds the support legs out are not at the same height on each side. One weld spot is actually1" higher than the other. This makes it sit canted on just three legs. I probably won't have time to exchange it and there as only one other at the store but I think I have a work-around for it.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Shooting-Accessories/Targets-Chronographs|/pc/104792580/c/104769180/sc/104625180/Do-All-Air-Gun-Auto-Reset-Target/1833122.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ftargets-chronographs%2F_%2FN-1100227%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104625180 (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Shooting-Accessories/Targets-Chronographs|/pc/104792580/c/104769180/sc/104625180/Do-All-Air-Gun-Auto-Reset-Target/1833122.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ftargets-chronographs%2F_%2FN-1100227%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104625180)

Not happy that something so simple as measuring where the weld spot goes could get messed up. Horrible QA. I opened the box in the store to make sure the spinners all move properly, but didn't actually set it up.    >:(

Also, is there a store anywhere near by just in case?

Whatever you bring will be appreciated.

It's kind of quiet in here. What days/times are you guys going? My wife is at the store now picking up some goods to bring.

I drilled a couple 2x4 pieces for the base of the spinners tonight, looks like it will work perfectly. I'll bring 3 large election signs to hold targets and quite a few paper targets too. If anyone has a bright colored spray paint and bright colored stickers, please do bring them to re-paint or mark the spinners. I'm sure the red paint on them won't last long.

Hopefully anyone planning on going didn't forget to check this thread, it's kind of buried at the bottom of the site. Anyone have any PM's left to send reminders out? I'm just about at the limit on PM's and there's a bunch I don't want to delete.

Saturday.  I have commitments from 10 or so shooters, I expect a few more.  The weather looks promising.  I hope others will contact me about the shoot.   I have sent direction info to those who have asked.

I will be mowing it again Thursday.  If I can remember, I'll thro some paint in the truck.  See you folks Saturday!

Had a great time.  Finally a chance to put faces with names and handle  a few rifles I often wonder about.  Thanks for the ride Mark, my turn next time.  That invading army didn't have a chance against the well armed defenders, but I believe the sling shot shooter could have taken them all by himself!  Thanks for putting it on, lots of fun!

Hey, you guys softened them up for me. By the time I got the slingshot out their morale was devastated and their command structure was nonexistent.

Major thanks to Bob and Lilly for hosting such a fun event. It was very generous of you both to allow us to use your property and I'm sure that all in attendance greatly appreciate it.

Also, a very special thanks to Mark (mobilemail) for letting me use his tank to keep my Mrod charged up. You probably saved me 1000 or more pumps over the course of the day, buddy. Of course, now you've ruined the hand pump for me. There is a deep seated resentment between me and the hand pump. I don't think our relationship will ever be the same again...

PS.

Bob, I'm sure you guys found the spinner target that I forgot there. You and Lilly should feel free to use it as much as you like. Hopefully in the not too distant future we'll have another shoot and I'll just pick it up then. Or I'll forget it again, whichever.

Thank you for all the good food that you brought.  I got to see some great rifles and pistols that I had only read about and you folks were nice enough to allow me to shoot them.

I feel that Lilly and I made new friends this weekend, thank you all for that opportunity.  I hope we can all meet again and shoot.

I'd like to give a huge thanks Bob and Lilly for a really fun weekend and for putting up with us. They brought a camper Bob made (I'd bet Lilly helped A LOT) and it was really impressive and looked cozy inside too. The fun shoot seemed to fly by and I hardly had time to talk to some really nice people. Just bad timing all day for me and Nicole. But the weather was perfect for camping and shooting (except for some wind, no biggie)
The whole event was very casual and there was plenty of time to shoot safely pretty much whenever we wanted to. We had a few fun shooting matches too, but me and Nicole weren't much competition for everyone so maybe others will give detail and brag  :D .

Special thank to Mark who let me use his spotting scope and Chrony. He gave us all some good laughs too. Thanks for all those that brought food too. We ate A LOT and there was still plenty left. I'm glad Blake (Jaximus) made it out too. He only recently joined the forum and still made drove out by himself.

Darn it Mark, I forgot to ask you about your bike camping story, man, time just seemed to fly. I hope everyone made it home safe and I'll post some pics soon.

Jerry, Nicole, and Others,

The pictures are great,  I hope you have more to post.

I got the B51 shooting again, I let it cool down overnight  and magically it work this morning. Perhaps, the mid-day heat elevated the pressure causing a lock.

After a day off, I'm ready to spin some cans.  I hope you all found the timed can pushing match enjoyable,  We need a catchy name for it.

Lilly and I are of to Kentucky Tuesday.  I may have to put a 'scope on Lilly's 853, she wants to stay with the competition.

Unfortunately, that's all of the pics she took. I wish there were some close-ups or even a pic of the food table. Loved the venison sausage and the chicken noodle soup.
I did like the timed match too.

After we left, I realized why I struggled with accuracy and got very frustrated. Besides the loose scope, I had cleaned the barrel a few weeks ago for the first time since the initial new-gun cleaning 3 or 4 years ago. I figured I'd have time before the trip to break it in again before the fun shoot but that just didn't happen. Then I totally forgot about it. I can't be sure, but I believe that's why the groups were huge. They did start to tighten up finally right near the end.
Oh the time I wasted trying to get a good group......

Hi Folks,

Do you think you would like to meet up and shoot again?  Fall?  Just asking, planning vacation time.
Fall would give me time to wax up my 'lil air gun and practice.

After seeing you folks shoot, Lilly wants an AO scope on her little Daisy. I think she going to set her butt on the ground and get serious.

Title: Re: A Shooter in Illinois
Post by: mobilemail on May 29, 2015, 10:39:22 PM
Dang Jerry, how the heck did you do that??  Most left handed folks were born that way, they didn't have to work for it...

I had an inspiration for the next shoot to make the competition a little funner. Imagine: a shooting line with stages. At each stage, a shooter will overcome some marksmanship challenge, and keep a little score as they go. For instance, stage one might me shooting army men at 10, 20, 30 yards.  Stage two might be how many shots to get a can past a certain point, say 10 yards from its starting point. Stage three might be paper targets sitting and standing. Stage four might be hitting swingers at 10 and 20 yards, etc.

If you really want to do it "traditional", everybody brings a little something to throw on the blanket. Tin of pellets, pack of targets, cheap stuff.  Best shooter gets first pick, 2nd goes next, etc. Everyone goes home with something,

Then we talk smack, ogle each others guns and eat a lot.  Thoughts?

I love the idea Mark. The timed can shoot was fun too.

For me, didn't have a stroke but it looks like serious nerve damaged that may not be curable except over time, maybe a year.
They discovered very lower sodium  levels that they said are very dangerous so I have to get kidney/pancreas tests ....
Neurologist appointments too. Not fun.

I still need to hear the bike camping story, and I hope you bring your wife too. Nicole and Lilly will definitely be there (unless my health interferes).

Mark,

I do like the idea of a blanket shoot.  Lilly and I are up for most kinds of air gun competition.

I need to figure out when the crops will be out of the field, winging farmers is NOT an option.  If that .25 NP is still gathering dust, bring it along,,,  again.

Jerry,

Please get better,  and no, we don't shoot plastic mini medics at the farm.  However, back in my trap shooting days, I did  often assign names to clay birds.

Hopefully I'm OK health-wise by then, but me and Nicole are kind of stuck staying in a tent. October will probably be pretty cold I imagine but if crops are up, no other options.
We might have to back out though if it turns out to be lows in the 30's or 40's. We don't have cold weather camping gear, unless somehow we can afford to rent a small camper.

When Lilly and I bought our teardrop camper it was the last week of December.  We had to try it out before spring.  Our nylon lined mid temp sleeping bags were so cold, we had two of them zipped together.  We bought 4.5 yards of flannel, folded it in half and used it for top and bottom sheets in the double sleeping bag.  You couldn't kick out of the folded flannel and it made a huge difference in comfort.  If in freezing weather we also sleep in joggers.  We have awakened to find ice on the inside of the windows as our camper has no heater.  Getting dressed in the mornings was a cold and quick.

I so wish I would have been able to make I but unfortunately life had to go and take over...

I'm glad to see that so many were able to attend and that you all had a safe and fun weekend. It's awesome to even know that a shooting event happened is possible in our great state!!!

Hopefully this was just the first of many events and I will be able to make it to those in the future.

As a side note I am searching for some other possible locations to perhaps be able to set up fun shoots more frequently for those that would be able to attend

Jerry - zip your bags together with space blankets top and bottom, all cozy.... until somebody has to pee. :-(

Bob - don't try to schedule anything around my availability, too much flux on my calendar (that's why I always use pencil to write on a calendar).  I'll make it if I can and if not live vicariously thru the posts.  Thanks

Steve

We only have one sleeping bag that we used as a bottom layer last time with two thick blankets on top. It worked pretty good but the weather wasn't TOO cold.

As it is turning out, October will be extremely hectic for Lilly and I.  I don't think that will be hosting one that month.  Bman in Indiana is planning one in the near future in the Bloomington area.  You might email him and see if you are welcome to attend.
