Title: How to use a spring compressor with an hw 50s
Post by: egd on May 15, 2021, 02:47:57 PM
I have a ARH kit to put in my 50s. From what I've researched most?/some seem to say I need a spring compressor. I've gathered all the materials I need to build one, but just haven't yet.
But the more I watch videos I can't figure out how to compress the spring but then twist the receiver to let off the pressure if it's held in the compressor. Do I just leave some slack in the holddown of the receiver so I can turn it? Am I over thinking this? And do I even need a compressor for that gun? Thanks

The spring may or may not have some preload depending on how the airgun is set up.  You need something on the contact face of your spring compressor that doesn't mar the breach block and is low friction.  I just used a piece of delrin for the contact area, but I think hardwood will work.  Keep some pressure on the breach block while unscrewing it.  On guns held together with pins you can tell when you have enough pressure because the pins loosen up and are easy to push out.  For the screw-on endcaps it's a little bit fidgety.

Here's an idea for your spring compressor.  Just use a bit of double-sided tape to attach a round disk cut out of a plastic milk carton to the contact face.

I never use one. I use an old piston seal against the workbench, press and twist.

Warren- yeah, I will use some rubbery material for that. I've got it all planned out in my head how to build it, just haven't yet. And I'm beginning to wonder if I need to.

Josh-I've watched videos of others doing the same thing and honestly I believe I'll try that first. But I also read somewhere (I've read/watched so many things)that the ARH springs have a lot of preload on them so I'm kinda concerned about getting it back together also.

I'm not sure what "alot" amounts to for spring preload, but they all have some level of preload . I have assembled/disassembled D460 mags, D48s , hw 95/50/30, D34s and tx200s all without a spring compressor.  May not be the right way, but its how I do it. YMMV

Just for ease of disassembly and reassembly I built a spring compressor - and very glad I did. Makes job easier. Simple build.

Mission accomplished.I didn't build a spring compressor but used a woodworking clamp to do the same thing. Getting it back together would have been VERY hard without it. With Mark's advice I got it done. It doesn't have the buzz it did have.

Good Job E, I'm glad it all came together for you ;)
