Now that I’ve ordered my first springer - an HW97 .177 - I’m hoping for your expertise regarding an appropriate scope. I have an Athlon Talos BTR (30mm tube - FFP) 4x14 that I can use, but I’m not sure if it is “springer rated”. I have only used it on PCPs. I plan to use a Sportsmatch Dampa rail mount - so I’m thinking that should help with springer recoil - Weihrauch actually recommends Dampa mounts for their springers. I’ve looked at Hawke AirMax scopes, but I’d love to be able to use the Athlon and save some money.

Use the Athlon, but check your warranty! Swapping scopes amounst various rifles is a PITA x10. ;) Picatiny rails help. But each scoped gun should have a dedicated scope t it, IMHO. ;D
Don't forget a gun bag or case for each gun either!

I'm not familiar with the Athlon scopes so I can't say either way on that one. After lots of questions and searching there have been a few scopes that seem promising. The Hawke Airmax scopes, Leupold and Burris. All of which are springer rated and have offerings in a similar price range.
The Hawke Airmax scopes seem very durable and highly recommended. Most reviews are positive. Should be excellent with the dampa mount, which I haven't been able to locate. Lol.
Leupold scopes offer lifetime warranty and seem very good also. I've known more than a few to use on powder burners with great success, buy not many have said they use on springers that I know of.
I'm going to be testing a Burris scope, hopefully being delivered today. I chose the Burris over the others because of their forever warranty, which is honored even if you're not the original purchaser(thinking ahead for my boy). To my understanding you just pay postage to them and they repair/replace and return, at no extra cost. They seem very good and hopefully works well on springers.
Alternatively, if the Athlon scope is springer rated, you could buy a cheaper scope for your pcp's and use that on your springer.

Your Talos BTR will be fine, even without the Dampa mount. (I didn't know Weirauch recommended them. Good to know) I had a regular Talos-not btr- mounted on my 97K with a Dampa mount and it was good. I have since moved it to another gun. But I called Athlon and asked them about being springer rated and they said any of the btr models would be ok.
Additionally, the 97 is not a really hard recoiling gun because of the weight.

I would defintely not go for a scope with a 30mm tube on a HW97k.
The HW97k is already quite heavy and the 30mm tube won't help. Also not in terms of the balance.
I have only Airmax scopes and they're great value for money. Very clear glass, so a Hawke Airmax 3-9x40am AMX with medium T04 Sportsmatch mounts will do the job.

The 97 will need a springer rated scope without a dampa mount. Roll the dice if you want but I'd check with the manufacturer and record the call. Personally I couldn't spend more money than an Airmax on a 50 yard airgun. People go nuts on magnification and glass on airguns that really don't deserve them. Talk to me when you're shooting past 300 yds. It's your money to waste. My 97 has a 4-12x40 Airmax which is more than enough and the scope turrets are mushy and worthless for real long range shooting. Still the reticle gives me enough range to stretch the gun out to a hundred yards without touching a turret. The glass is way more than necessary for 100yds. Most people over scope their guns thinking it's going to make them a better shooter.

For the money, I like a one inch Hawk Airmax; if you want to spend to the next level(IMHO)Athlon Argos.

I have used Leupold scopes on our air rifles, but note that you'll need to find a model with the EFR label, used or new, to get a model with an AO/SF that focuses down under 50 yards if parallax adjustment is an issue for you. 50 yards is otherwise the minimum on their AO or SF scopes.
I currently use the current Leupold Freedom 3-9x EFR on my light springers such as the HW 30 and 50 for the sake of keeping weight down and size compact. Nice little scope, but pretty basic - just a standard duplex (though it is a fine rimfire duplex), 1/4 MOA adjustments and non-resettable turrets ... AND not cheap what with all the recent Leupold price increases. As for used Leupolds, they always go for a premium, but worth looking.

How much does your gun weight? How much does the scope weight? Is this a bench gun or a free standing shooting gun?
Do you want a one pound scope or a two+ pound scope? Otherwise, buy a $50 scope until you decide????

I regret not buying a few of the Nikon EFRs too. The image clarity, reticle, magnification, weight and price are all ideal IMHO for spring guns. They were a good value too.

I’m not upset over Nikon dropping scopes. I purchased one 3-9 EFR from them for my R9 and it had the worst POI shift via objective adjustment of any scope I’ve ever owned. Reticle was nice and glass was clear and bright but didn’t have it where it counted. May have just been a bad one for me. Either way I returned it and moved on.

I just got a couple of Dampa mounts from Airguns of Arizona.
The Dampa mounts are excellent and well worth the money. They recently came down in price. They used to be a hundred bucks each. Still worth the money if it saves you from rotating scopes for warranty services.

A dampa mount is absolutely NOT needed on a HW97k. I think a HW97k can even shoot a non-springer rated scope.

I'm going to play it safe and put the Hawke 4-16 30mm tube in a Dampa mount. that will be going on the HW97 that should be here this week.
I have a nice, older Leupold FX2 3-9 with a dot reticule that I may give a try.

I'm putting the same scope (I think-4x16x44 compact?) on my 97, just waiting for some mounts to come in. They are not Dampa, but I have a Dampa on my 50s with a talon scope-doing fine so far, fingers crossed.

Hawke 4-16 x 44 mm compact IR, SF with Hawke Tactical medium 2 piece rings. Excellent combo IMHO.

I got the Leupold 3-9x32 EFR. Excellent glass. Thought might have some problems with light transmission because of the small objective, but it's very bright. And when using the turrets to switch from 20yd zero to 50, it goes right back to where it's supposed to. It wasn't cheap, but when I scope a gun, I don't think it should ever need replacing. My only complaint is I wish it had Mil dots or hash marks for holdover.

And when using the turrets to switch from 20yd zero to 50, it goes right back to where it's supposed to. It wasn't cheap, but when I scope a gun, I don't think it should ever need replacing. My only complaint is I wish it had Mil dots or hash marks for holdover.

Leupold's Custom Shop will change the reticle for you, at a price of course.......

I'm sure they would change the reticle at a price I dont want to pay. Generally I shoot no more than 20 yards and can leave it on that same distance. This year I have a couple woodchucks around that aren't honoring our 15 year truce. I've had a couple Leupold on my PB and they've been perfect. I currently only have the one gun I use, so a more expensive scope for 1 gun won't break me. And I try to mount scopes low, because I shoot better with a good cheek weld. My wife didn't like the price, but gave me the ok. When I got it mounted I had her look through it, and she said "wow, I can see why you wanted this one. This thing is awesome" and we never discussed the price again.
