Title: Sighting in
Post by: PGunner on April 21, 2021, 12:31:50 PM
Crosman 1377
Is there a distance that would be best for sighting in a red dot(squriels)?
What is the farthest distance for a kill shot with the 1377 a 7.5gr to about a 8.5gr ?
Lot of variables there Rough idea I know.

I'm not familiar with the gun. What velocity does it shoot? I've shot squirrels with lower powered springers so maybe there's some common information here.

What length barrel?
My stock 1377 is sighted in at 20 yds.

How big is the area you are shooting?  Is this in your yard and you are planning on a "table for one" type of shooting?

If you know the range you are going to be taking 90% of your shots..... zero at that distance.  That will help eliminate any of the hunting jitters once you get on a live animal.

An advertised 600fps 177 gun is really a 20 yard gun for squirrels. 600fps advertised is likely less with 7.5-8.5 grain pellets. With a pistol a 20 yard shot takes talent anyway. I'd sight it at 10 yards and practice hold over at 15 and 20. If concerned about making a quick clean kill I'd think twice about taking iffy 20 yard squirrel shots. Squirrels are tough critters and there's not much power left by then. Head shots are required with low power guns at these distances. The hitch is head shots on squirrels get tougher to make as distance increases. I'm sure someone else will have a different opinion but this is mine.

I agree with Bayman, the further out with red dots or open sights, the tougher it's gonna be to get a head shot on a squirrel.

This past summer I was doing pesting, I had a bad chipmunk problem with an electrical box, and I'd be trying to do head shots scoped at 50-60 yards and it takes lots of practice. I was getting a ~90% hit rate. The rest of the time would be in their midsection. Not bad - none got away. But this is for someone who practically shoots every single day. Chipmunk heads are small. lol

Two main guns was the Fortitude and the Mk II both chambered in .22 using Crosman Domed 14.3g rounds.

Some are back yard and some will be about 15yrds fr0m what is said I was thinking 15 yard sight and anything under that is good.

What distance can you consistently hit something the size of the kill zone of a squirrel with your gun and sight? No sense sighting in at any distance longer than that. If you can't hit well enough to kill, you're shooting too far.

I guess I'll have to kill a few and see at what distance is good.lol

You're probably right depending on actual velocity (and pellet type) you can still have a little drop at 15 yards. It might cause you to over shoot in closer. Sight in at 15 and set up a 1" target at 10 yards to see where you land. Just to be sure. With open sights you should be fine.

With a scope up close shots are harder because you have to guess hold under and over because of scope height. My yard is only 20 yards deep and I do much better with peeps than scopes. For example with the scope zeroed at 10 yards, when critters inside of ten yards I need hold over. Between 10 and 20 I need hold under. Gets weird in your head because you'd think opposite. It's much easier to use peeps or open sights at close ranges. Peeps zeroed at ten yards and 600-700fps, anything inside of 20 yards is dead. Practice is most important.

Also. Even at short ranges wadcutters drop (and drift) considerably more than domed pellets. I prefer wadcutters in tight quarters because of they pack a wallop you can hear and bleed off speed and energy so quickly. I don't need cranky neighbors.

I usually use stingers about 7.5gr for most of my guns seem to work about the best I haven't done a lot of hunting with pellets but the tree rats run a muck here and I hates them and I want to see how my 1377 works with a few upgrades.

I use them in my R9 .20cal can't find them and .20cal are getting hard to find. I might have to change out the barrel. Then that would cause another question .177 or.22.

Right now with the mass ammo shortage, I'd go .177.

Lot of variables there Rough idea I know.

My experience is that gun can kill starlings out to 25 yards, but I have never shot a squirrel, so I would assume closer to 15-20, depending on pumps.

Pistol silhouette is a good sport for a pistol hunter.  You will learn the pellet flight path and sight hold to 18 yards, which is a good stopping point.

I've noticed some of the pellets and pellet guns are no longer available.
