Title: Winchester .30 hunting.
Post by: Nomadic Pirate on January 15, 2020, 12:24:49 AM
Been putting a lot of miles on my boots lately but I haven't been able to bring bacon home  ;D

It has been raining a lot lately here so I decided today to go sit in my Banyan blind, took some 50/50 laced with Truffle oil and tossed it around on trails that cross the area.

Not long into the hunt 2 nice medium sows came down a trail and put the brakes on once they got to the laced 50/50  ;D ;D and started eating,

I was considering if I was gonna take a shot or not, if I was gonna wait for something else when this big Sow came in hot and displaced the 2 others,.....mind made up  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Took a shot at the temple and she was down,

I know, a bit of a boring hunt  ;D ;D
hopefully I'll have one more exciting when I walk around with my wicked Arrow launchers in close quarters ;D

Nice job on the sow Manny! You got some bacon there.
If you ask me there’s isn’t a boring hunt. It’s either a great day outdoors and no hard work or a successful hunt and the real work begins after the photos are done. Congrats! I’ll be waiting for the airgun Hunt report.

Great way to start off 2020, bruddah! How big is that girl?

I've been skunked since Thanksgiving. Probably gonna try again this weekend, but we'll see how it goes.  :-\

Thank you! Hunting regs in my state require a .30 cal or bigger pcp to hunt  feral hogs.  Thank you for confirming that the Winchester can do the job on pork.  It is high on my list for a new rifle.

Carter, it's .30 & up in Florida for deer. Hogs have no caliber requirement that I know of.

You've got to really parse the fine print in the regulations.  There is no caliber requirement on private land.  That regulation is found in the general rules section, but each WMA has it's own specific regs.  On public land hogs fall under the rules for Deer and Turkey.  You have to check each WMA's regs to find out what applies.  You can hunt hogs during small game season on WMA's but not with a centerfire.  So,  I figured a big bore PCP would be ideal.  There used to be good hog hunting just up the road from you in Matanzas S.F.
Oh yeah.  Small game season is the longest season in Florida and there are special season hog hunts on many WMA's all year round.  With a big bore PCP I could hunt pretty much whenever I wanted all year long!  Heck yeah!

I have to convince the wife that we need to move to God's Waiting Room. My .30 100 fpe marauder would be the perfect rifle for that

God's waiting room?  That's south Florida.  I live right on the line between Florgia and Florabama.  We call it LA, or lower Alabama!

Nice shot Manny.

Curious, how long does a pig that size last in your freezer?  That is, how long does it take to consume that much meat?

I only went deer hunting once, and that doe lasted us a long time. Fish on the otherhand doesn't last long in our house.

Where I live now I have just about no storage room, so I take only one leg everything else gets given away

Manny, would that Sow be good smoked for pulled pork BBQ?

Just curious as I have never taken a wild pig of any sort.

Thanks!

Yup, I used to take hogs to my old restaurant and the chef used to make Carnitas :)

Carnitas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnitas)

Not the same thing as low and slow smoked pork.   I am guessing that these wild porkers may be too lean, but then again I have never taken nor cooked one.
Thanks!

You can make whatever you want with wild hogs, it's all in the preparation.

Precisely, but leaner pork may not do well for pulled pork when smoked low and slow.

I thought you might have had some experience smoking wild pork low and slow.  My bad.

Thanks.

Kerry...

From what I've seen, the wild porkers are usually a lot leaner than their domesticated counterparts. I've tried smoking wild porkers before, and it's really an exercise in heat and time control.

The meat is leaner, so it tends to be drier. It'll also depend on what cut of meat you're smoking as well as the age and size of the pig. I'd recommend a 40lb plump sow; use the backstraps, tenderloin and belly. There may be some fat on the butt, but it's not enough to compensate, so take only the top layer there.

I'd also recommend wrapping it in foil (not too tightly) so that you can keep as much of the juices as possible. You can take the drippings and pour it on your pulled pork to make it even more succulent.

We deboned a leg and put the meat in the smoker for 12 hours. Came out good, but was a little dry.

Just a suggestion.  ;)

I have quite a bit of experience smoking *Boston Butts* for pulled pork, so I figured the wild pigs were drier/leaner because of less fat.

Personally, I like a LOT of smoke (Pecan for low and slow) when doing pulled Pork.   Just never have had a wild pig to try.

What you say jibes exactly with what I was thinking.   If I ever have the chance to smoke one, I will do my due diligence beforehand.

Thanks!

Glad I could help Kerry.

If I can also pass another suggestion: get your hands on a nice 15 pounder and deep fry it.

Sweet mother it's so tender. My 13yr old son can wipe out half of that pig.  :o

I personally don't smoke my pork, much prefer it done other ways.

But the wast majority of the boys here do smoke them and it comes out just fine.

Round here a 50 lb. piney woods rooter is considered the perfect eating pig.  Just about right for pit roasting overnight.  They tend to run lean but a little extra pork fat from the butcher will take care of that.

i been smoke'n wild hog hams with pecan for many years.
and other cuts for pulled use.
no problems.....no such thing as a "lean" feral hawg in LOWEST alabama.
even the choice size....piglets, it just takes a couple;)

When my son turned 18 I took him to visit a friend in the North Carolina mountains we spent 4 days in the woods hunting wild pigs. The one my son shot was an older mature boar that was ~ 190lbs dressed out, mine was a young sow the boar was delicious but way to tough for anything other than sausage. The good news at the time was that my son's one good friend's parents were off the boat Italian and his mom made killer sausage with the meat for us. I gave his friends parents a hind quarter and all parties were quite happy with the arrangement. The sow was tender and delicious also and way more flavorful than domestic pork.

Try smoking pork with apricot wood. It imparts a natural sweetness to the pork.     MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Good!

we have bears too here, but there not a threat to the hogs here.
i have several game cam video's of 200-300lb hogs running off 135+ lb bears away from corn feeders and bait blocks.

i only take the piglets to eat..... ;D

As I said before MMMMMMMH piglets!  We have a major nuisance Bear problem here.  This is the least populated Florida county other than the glades'. For the last fifty years FWC has been "relocating" nuisance Bears here. We have way too many and they are the criminal masterminds of the Bear world!   ;D

I envy the Hawaii guys pit roasting their hogs. That looks so freakin tasty.

I hated finding that 30lb piglet I unknowingly killed with that other hog recently both in 1 shot. Would have been great eating but the vultures were grateful at least when I found them feasting on it a couple days after being dealt with. I'm looking forward to eating a piglet one of these days. We don't really have bears in our area just black panthers and cougars.

We have cougar (not Florida Panther) here but they are rare.  We had the first Bear hunt in Florida in 20 years here about two years back.  The administration of it was so botched that we got terrible publicity from it.  If we ever have another one I'd trade Manny a bear hunt in Florida for a hog hunt in Hawaii!
