More Newb-Scope Question

Thanks to GTA, I think I've found my rifle for FT.
Now, I have narrowed down to two scopes: Nikko Stirling Target Master 6-24x50 and Leapers 8-32x50. I understand that neither is going to rangefind to 50 yards. I also understand that they may be useless at full magnification due to fuzz, darkness and eye relief. Is there any other material difference in these scopes that I should consider?
I won't have the "dope" for anything other than holdover guessing for quite some time, but I'd like to attempt to rangefind later on and it would be my assumption that these scopes might help with it out to 35-40 yards maybe. Is this a futile endeavor? Should I stay away from (or assume mediocrity in) Open until I'm willing to drop some coin on optics?
And corollary to the above, if I'm looking at mid-200 to 300 or so for optics, is there something else I should be looking at that wont dabble with high power and range-finding, that is, a fixed power scope or some 3-9 or something?

The leapers will range 50 give or take a little depending on brightness on 32x. I have one on my HW97. It has a very narrow field of view though. The mil dots are accurate at 10x and are half mils at 20x. If you are shooting hunter with sticks you cannot adjust power during the match and it must be at 12x or less. Nothing ranges past about 40 yards at that power. If you shoot Open or WFTF you can crank the power and click for ranges all you want but will need to support the gun yourself.

Thanks, again, cm. Looks like that's a good choice then. Did you get med, high, or low rings for your rifle? Any mounting problems with that scope?
And thanks for the heads up on the ranging. I had read various things that indicated that much under 40x and really clear (like $1000+ glass) might make life difficult range finding at 50. Having actually never tried it, I didn't know for sure. My eyes are still pretty decent.
Thanks to you, it's looking like I may have a pretty decent rig eventually that will way outshoot me in this event. I haven't shot sitting or kneeling since Rifle and Shotgun Merit badge about 35 years ago. Assuming Krale doesn't price me out when they restock HW97s.

See if Hawke still makes the sidewinders with the SR Pro reticle if you're talking about doing hunter class. Mine has been great. I wouldn't use it for open as the turret clicks are nowhere near as crisp as on my Sightron 10-50x60 which is what I recommend if your talking about open class.
