My grandfather's method of eradicating a yellow jackets' nest in the ground would not be considered environmentally save today but it worked. He would take a glass soda pop bottle and pour about 1/2 cup of gasoline in the bottle. He would walk over and quickly invert the bottle while poking it in hole in the ground. He would come back the next day and remove the bottle. The fumes from the gasoline would kill all the yellow jackets.

It was posted in reply #6 on this thread and yes not likely EPA/PC correct for today but I use what I know works that was passed down from past generations.BD

He was something else. He taught me so many things about the way people used to do things. By the way he used the "gasoline in a coke bottle" thing for killing ants too. He would just jab it done in the ant hill. He said the fumes would kill the ants and eggs.
They nest somewhere on my house every year. If you find the entrance, Sevin (powder, not the liquid) works great. The trick is you have to put it at the entrance where they will walk across it on their way into the nest. I usually see a huge drop in activity after about 5 hours, the next day, they're all dead. All the usually precautions, wait until night time, etc. I usually attach a container to a broomstick and dump it from a distance, day or night, but I do occasionally get stung like that, so I would recommend doing it at night. Last summer one nest I dosed was completely silent after 7 hours, the other I did at night and by noon the next day there were only a few still alive, but their guards were dead and I sealed the hole with rodent wool and aluminum flashing while those last few, who didn't look too healthy, were still trying to use it.
