Wanna set up a very efficient Hog feeder ?
« on: February 08, 2020, 07:22:27 PM »
This are a few pictures of my feeder from last week,..never took a shot.

So, how do I set up my Hog feeders ?

1st of all I make a skirt for the bucket so it doesn't spray the corn everywhere, but makes it drop straight down

Then a start a hole right under, initially I put some corn laced with something to get the hogs into it.

once they start they will keep digging day after day and make quite a big hole out of it.

What's the advantage ?

A couple,

first it will make the hogs work to find all the feed hidden under displaced dirt, also it will make them stand still rather then go crazy mopping corn off the forest floor,  and it will last longer, it takes them longer to finish it.

An other thing, use 50/50 rather then Whole corn, can mix in some of the Whole corn just to give them a reward but the 50/50 makes them work much more and lasts a lot longer on the ground.

This is the feeding grounds today,...has rained a lot this week

Hey Manny  when I am pre baiting before I move in my corral trap I have used a one hundred gallon plastic barrel, commercial soaps come in them. I drill one inch holes all over it then drill a hole on the edge at the top and put a chain through it and chain with a lock to a tree. They will roll it around and the WHOLE corn will dribble out a little at a time. Makes them work hard. I didn't, chain one when I first tried it and found my barrel about three hundred yards away in the bottom of a canyon. Any way just one more thing to try if need be. Take care.    Mike

Yeah, that one can be done also with PVC piping, never made one because I hardly ever have enough clear terrain to make it work, or most times flat enough

I was going to mention that too Mike but another thing that works great with the hole method is putting heavy tree limb pieces in the hole which makes the hogs work harder on finding the corn where it lasts longer plus that directs their attention to getting the wood out of their way instead of looking for you. A distracted hog is easier to kill.

I understand how Mike's idea and the PVC pipe one work, but don't quite follow how Manny's version controls the corn. There's a hole and a skirt, but is there something to keep it from just pouring out into a pile on the ground?

That hole was just a rip done by a rat raiding the feeder at night, it doesn't effect the skirt job.

When the feeder goes off and sprays the corn it hits the burlap skirt and it falls straight down in the hole.

If you look at some old threads I used to have an other feeder location and yes I used to have logs over the hole too :)

I need to clear out a patch at the ranch and set up something like that. Hopefully it works, though...the pigs here seem to be suspicious of food that doesn't grow in the ground or fall from the tree. We've put out melons and scraps...and they won't touch it.

Ah, automatic feeder. If I were more familiar with them, I guess "spray" in the original post would have been the clue. Thanks for the clarification!

Yep feeders generally cast corn in a circle several feet wide just like a seed spreader. I've thought about using the shirt to drop the corn in a pile and putting a horse feeder under it for the corn to drop in so any corn not eaten after a stand could be scooped up and put back into the feeder so deer, coons and other critters couldn't steal it once I leave. There are remote control feeders as well where you can trigger it to drop corn while you are in your stand or blind. I've seen hunting shows where the hogs come running in right after hearing the trap release corn as they become aware of what that sound means once familiarized with feeders where they actually bed in woods nearby just waiting to hear the feeder run.
