Tinkering with a Webley VMX stock

Because I'm bored, because I can and because I have the stuff just sitting, I decided I was gonna play with the stock on my Vortex gas rammed VMX .20 and see about getting rid of some of the recoil echo and making it a little bit quieter.
First was filling that hollow butt with black 100% silicone and cut to fit PA pellet foam. Done it before, works very well and I added a couple 1/2 inch x 3 inch long steel screwsin the bottom to balance the weight a bit.
Second was lining the inside with sound deadener. It's the same stuff they use to line car trunks, sticky backed and easily cuttable with scissors. I also softbedded around the screw holes with 1/8th inch open cell neoprene.
Third was strips of the same sound deadener they use inside computer towers to lessen fan noise on the bottom half of the receiver. Between it and the stuff I used to line the stock, it also makes for pretty good soft bedding.
Fourth was the same trick I did to the spring piston version I have and wanted to again so the front stock screw holes got drilled out a bit, fitted with drilled to size bronze flange bushings and epoxied in place to protect the screw holes. The factory screws got replaced with allen head versions for easier removal and all 3 got coated with Vibra Tite VC-3 when i put it all back together.
Last but not least once all that settles will be getting the muzzle break off and replacing it with a 1/2-20 UNF adapter bought off Ebay and Rocker1 LDC I also have sitting here. The end of the barrel is only about a 1/4 inch or so inside that break and does nothing for sound so I figured why not try the LDC.
Will any of it help? Not a clue but I tinker when I'm bored, every bit of it is easily removable and I'll find out when I get to take a few shots...lol

I,m interested to see how it all works out. I think it should do a lot to reduce the noise of the action and I like the brass bushing mod for the front screws. I would think they will be a more durable hold.

I got the idea after reading here about mac1 screw cups and decided to try making something similar for an Edge stock and it worked out great. The inside edge of the bushing presses against the receiver instead of crushing the stock against it and wearing out the plastic. I've never had a problem with the stocks cracking on the guns I've done it to.

That should help. I used plumber's putty if a zip lock bag to stuff into my VMX stock. That way I can removed it or add more to it, if needed. I lined the receiver with foam tape at all contact points. It cut down on the TWANG a fair amount . THEN, the stock broke off at one of the front screws !
I put a Striker wood stock on it, then.

At some point I'll cave and buy and modify a Striker stock for one of them bur for now just tinkering with the stock it came in. Mine have the 2 piece cocking arm, so I need to cut the lip on the inside of the stock for the cocking arm pin to ride on.
TW Chambers has some of the original Beech stocks made for that older style cocking arm and and I'd love to get my hands on at least one of them. I've tried several times to get them to sell me one but they won't saying the packaging would be oversized and their shipper always returns them, so they won't sell them to anyone in the States.

Moderator came off pretty easy with a heat gun and some tapping with a rubber mallet. Installed the 1/2-20 UNF adaptor I got from a gentleman in Poland who custom makes them and was only about $15 and screwed on the rocker1 ldc I've had sitting here in a box. Overall makes the rifle about 5 inches longer but with the added weight in the butt, it still balances very nicely for a now 47 1/2 inch rifle from the 42 1/2 inches it originally came.
After finally getting to play some and put some pellets downrange, accuracy is still spot on and the rifle is much quieter and feels a lot more solid. No hollow echos and the only vibration is the usual gas ram/piston noise which was already muted a bit by a couple tricks I did while building it and a little more by the sound deadener I put along the bottom of the receiver.
More than happy with the tinkering and how it turned out and I can easily remove it all later if I want.

I know they will. Have a 1000X that came in one, an Edge Vortex .22 I got one for and my Webley Spector rides in one I customized a bit for it.

Steve,
How do you like the Vortex gas ram? I wish it would fit a Hatsan 95 vortec.
What did you do to the gas ram?

Top of the piston and the gas ram both got poor man's buttons aka super glued pieces of a Mt. Dew bottle to keep them from rubbing inside the receiver and a light coat of moly on them to make them ride smoother and a bit quieter. Love the gas ram in it, glad I made the swap to see how it would shoot.
Email HatsanUSA about that gas ram...seems like I've seen a couple mentions of them now selling gas rams and trigger parts but ask and see what they say. They're the same ram for what it's worth, only difference is the 95 has a forked piece attached to the end so the trigger pack has room to slide up inside the rifle. I think it's just held on there with a set screw or 2 but don't quote me on that as I'm not entirely sure.

Steve,
Do the Mt. Dew buttons work better than the ARH buttons?
Do they stay in place better?
Thanks,

I've used both and both work very well. I always have a Mt Dew bottle here either already empty or on it's way to being that way and just cut a small square about 1/2 an inch long and the width of the back edge on the piston or use a paper punch and cut actual buttons, then just super glue them on.
