Can someone send explain why pellet rifle barrels are cooked & where the choke would be in the barrel? I read posts here about barrels being shortened & re choked & have no understanding of this.

Choke is a slight narrowing of the bore (measured in ten thousandths of an inch) at the muzzle. It stabilizes the pellet right before it exits, and improves accuracy.
Cut the barrel shorter on the muzzle end, and you lose the choke. To choke the barrel, you must deform the barrel inwards to tighten the bore. Usually involves a press and formed blocks to evenly press the bore in, or a rolling press.

JMJ's explanation pretty well covers it. I will add that it's mainly the better airguns that are choked in the first place. The less expensive Chinese and Crosman level guns are not commonly choked. Although choking can improve the accuracy of a barrel that is not to say an unchoked barrel cannot shoot well.

For pellets to be accurate they need to spin on their axis very stably.
Chokes help do this. Also, airgun barrels usually have a different rifling ratio than Power Burners.

I will also add to this, a good barrel does not need a choke at the muzzle end, all a choke does is swage the pellet to uniform its size, the spinning comes from the rifling in the bore, a good crown is more important then a choke, if you have a good barrel to begin with? I have several HW barrels that are chopped down to 10.5 and 12.25 inches that have had no choke added back to them at all, and every one of them are 1 hole group accurate if I do my part!

Thanks to all for the explanation. I have read of members shortening barrels on this forum & wondered how it effected the barrel choke & just what the chokes intended function was.
