The dial caliper I primarily use is a Bestool-Kanon Model # DMK-J. My Brown & Sharp is real old and is not as accurate as it once was.

Oh a little side note, none of them are shock proof no matter what it says on it. Don't ask how I know

Another vote for Mitutoyo. I have several cheapies that I have tossed over the years but the Mitutoyo 500-196-** always works and is always accurate. You must however be careful where you buy one from. Alot of fake Mitutoyo's out there.

Mitutoyo all the way, cry once buy once.
Yes. If the measurements you take matter, use a decent reliable instrument. I have several Mitutoyos. Some are from company closures and are for "rough jobs", including using the beak points as scribes on inked metal. Then, others are pristine and treated very gently.

Don't know if you're still looking but usshoptools is a good place to look. Digitals from $28 to Starrett price.
