I think you need Seven (my lucky #)... yep one for every four fpe cuase it ryhmes(will please the pellet gods )... so one each for 8-12-16-20-24-28-32 fpe..
The 10 grain heavies shoot very well at 915 fps in the Gauntlet. I haven't tried the 13 grain pellets. The 22 Varmint shoots around the same as the Gauntlet at 23 fpe so I assume the 17 cal would be similar to the Gauntlet.
After shooting my .22 Airforce Condor for about three years, I recently had a .177 to play with for a few days. Man, what a different animal. All my PCP's have been .22 and one .25. The pellets are tiny and fussy to load for sure but I was shocked that the trajectory was so different. I am currently selling a .22 barrel to fund a .177 or maybe .20. I haven't decided yet. When I first started I got caught up in the "bigger, faster, stronger" mentality. I am ....
LEts see:1. Do you do any indoor or 10 meter practice (which I can highly recommend if you live in the really cold climates and need a little break from "cabin fever").2. Are pest birds on the menu? (There is more than a gain of truth in ".22 for fur/.177 for feathers").3. Do you have a use for a whole lot of shots at really low energy? An 8 foot pound .177 is still pretty "zippy" (7.33gr. at +700fps) while a .22 at that speed is more like a sling-shot(14.3gr. @ +500fps).For your who like power. Are several (pretty cheap to moderately expensive) rifles that can manage +30 foot pounds in .177. Lot of folks will say "no..got no use for it"....but at least as many folks, if they are honest with them selves, will admit "yeah...that would take care of a good portion of my trigger time").If you crave power...then there are several rifles (moderate $ to high $) that can manage +30 foot pounds in .177....mostly using the 15-16.2gr. super-heavy-weights....but 16.2gr. at 920fps still rates the same energy in .177 as in .22.
With all the new heavy .17 pellets that caliber gun has surely become more appealing.
I have a WTB for a Rainstorm .17 on the classified,....but so far nobody called
I just ordered a Hatsan Bullmaster in .177 and some Jab heavies(13.4gr) from PA last night w their 15% deal. We'll see how they perform. I'm not even sure if they'll fit in the mags. 😮

Even the lighter ammo now has my attention for something different in terms of a shooting experience.
