Installed a new seal and twister spring in my 124. I've shot about 700 rnds and still has the buzz to it after firing. So is this cured by a top hat or sleeve or both. I can make a top hat but with the twister spring would I need to trim coils? If so how many or do you remove off the spring the same amount as the top hat takes up? I had a water bottle sleeve in it but the velocities were down 80 fps. Took it out and velocities went to 830. I'm willing to detune some to get a better shot cycle.Jim
The Maccari twister spring fits the guide rod very tight. You basically thread it on when installing. The best this gun ever shot was with a stock spring with a liberal application of Beeman's clear Mainspring Damping Compound. Mine did speed up some after few hundred rounds but still was much better than it was before. Just a thunk, when you shot. So if I understand correctly you don't use top hats or sleeves in a FWB 124? If the spring is tight to the quide which mine seems to be does the vibrations come from the other end of the spring tucked inside the piston? Thus my thought of a top hat. I don't envision shooting this rifle in cold weather. Mostly indoors at a 50ft range.
I have been shooting for a while and do not do anything to prevent twang. Really never noticed it but I am hard of hearing. Seems to me a coil spring unloading against the front of a compression chamber should twang. How does twang, in and of itself, effect performance of the air rifle. I have tried some of these remedies and not seen any change except reduced muzzle velocity. I don't care how it sounds.
I have Krytox 205 in it now, so I need a thicker lube like the 226? Maybe I need to purchase JM's soft kit and lube with the thicker lube. Thanks for the photo that explained a lot. Bought the rifle off of Beeman around 1979. Sn 21347. The kit should work well. Thanks all for the advise.Jim
I've owned two scope destroyers. A RWS 54 and the Kodiak. The 54 was due to the recoilless system and the Kodiak kicks hard. It bruises my shoulder if I shoot much. I have an R10 in 20 cal. that is down on velocity. Purchased it new I don't know how long ago. It's a carbine and never did like the shot cycle on it. Good winter project. My thinking on the 124 is to reuse the spring I have and make a Delrin spacer for the piston end. If that doesn't satisfy me I will install a plastic sleeve inside the piston and see what that does.
