This past Saturday marked the start of regular firearms season here in TN which includes air rifles. I had promised my 11 year old that if he was doing well with school and behaving, that I would let him hunt with my Texan and I would sit with him. We took our time getting ready and didn't go in to the woods until it was starting to get light. We eased our way down through the woods and placed ourselves on the ground over-watching a choke point about 30 yards wide with a cliff on one side and the red river on the other. I have monitored the spot for the last several years and have found that during the rut, almost every buck that comes through the area, comes right through that point at some point during the day.
I had hunted this same area almost non-stop since Archery season in September without tagging a single deer, although I saw many that I was not satisfied with, save a small 8 pointer I harvested the last few days of muzzleloading season. Luck of the draw said that it was my Son's turn and we were both expecting a herd of does or a small buck to come through eventually.
He was leaning back against a rock, watching some squirrels and this went on for about an hour and a half. Then, out of nowhere, this guy comes strutting out, quickly I might add, with some does across the river on his mind. Within 5 seconds of seeing him, the shot was fired. I knew it was a good shot when I heard the cracking of bone and saw the impact makes his whole front end tremble. However, I have also seen many deer that were never found because they swam across a river, or didn't bleed enough to be tracked without dogs so I tried to keep my emotions under control to keep my Son from getting upset. Which, he wasn't, as he was able to see the stud stop and fall over.
Either way, we backed off to the house and got the ATV and waited about a half hour to retrieve him.
I have hunted deer myself for 30 of my 42 years on this earth and I have to say, I can count on one hand the amount of deer of that caliber that I have witnessed personally in the free range woods. I can honestly say that he blew all my "records" away and I couldn't be more happy about it.

Matt, please tell your 11-year old son that Mr. Mike sends his congratulations.
And for you, that will likely not be the last time that boy shows up his dad. I have been out shined by my Matthew several times.

Big congrats to your son Matt. He grew a lot since we were there for your fun shoot. I'm glad you have a ATV to get that deer out, that hill is STEEP! Enjoy the meat.

Incredible, Matt!
It's nice to not see another "I shot a rat out in my backyard" video!
I look forward to a future thread in which you tell us how your son kilt a bar with his bowie knife.
Probably the only thin better than bagging a buck is hunting with your son. (Even if you bagged nothing.) Great stuff !

That is awesome! Great shot to your son and I love hearing about father son shooting/hunting stuff. That is a monster of a buck too! Are you taking it in to a locker? If you do, it will be interesting to see how much venison is there. Thanks for sharing.
