It seems there is a sliding scale on bullet/slug weight as it goes up, where the needed FPE goes down. On PB forums, the energy needed to ethically kill and Elk is quite high, but the bullet weights and sizes are small.Contrast that with Bow hunting forums (bypassing air guns for now), and you'll find 50-60 FPE is fine. The difference is those arrows are 400gr or heavier.A lowly .22LR is over 100 FPE, but nobody would recommend you use it for an elk.It sounds like the PB, Air gun and Bow people need to get together and make a better cross-reference chart. Lol
I am a old time PB shooter but new airgun shooter. I've always wanted to ask this question.I see recommendations that a big bore airgun (like .45 or so) can safely take down deer, elk and the like. I don't understand how, or at least ethically.Deer I can understand, but not elk or bigger. From what I read, the FPE energy of a big bore slug is barely better than a pistol round, and about HALF of an intermediate rifle round like the 7.62x39...let alone any normal centerfire rifle bullet. Is there something I'm missing.

LolLast thing you look with archery is FPE, Broadheads make the damage because razor sharp edges cut so much tissue and don't need much velocity to make it happen.
I've played around some with lever-action 30-30s, and my uncle reloaded. In fact, I don't recall the last decade he bought ammo from a store as a complete bullet. Anyway, he used low-power 30-30 on rabbit and could turn around and use a much hotter load for white-tail and black bear. It kinda reminds me of turning the dial back on my Career Ultra for pellets and turning it up for slugs. Apply the appropriate power and pull the trigger!I also say that pistol-round rifles excite me. PCPs are kinda similar. Add more barrel, get more power!

Wow, what a firecracker. And VERY accurate with slugs and pellets, NOE slugs (I'll get mold number later), and both FX 81grain and Hatsan 82 grain domes. Thanks for pointing out the gun to me, Manny! BTW, both my SPA M25 and the Career shoot those NOE slugs very well. Coyota don't have a chance at the ranges we see them, and the power/caliber are plenty adequate for Bambi.

Like an older brother to the Eagle Claw. I think you know what you are getting next
