Ebay- just over $900 shipped. Shipping was free, taxes got me. It was still a pretty good deal, I think. I'm going to measure the spindle bore to verify when it gets here though- The ad says a 5" chuck, w/a 1.5" spindle bore. I notice a lot of the 8x lathes on ebay are now advertising that size... Kinda suspicious, when a month or so ago, the vast majority of 8x lathes were the typical .70" spindle bore. I'm excited, but I'm still a bit worried. Supposedly, per the ad, it will do both imperial and metric threads, and I'm not sure what the lead screw is. But threading operations are a ways off for me. So I guess I'll worry about that later. I'm just hoping this ebay lathe experience is better than my last, and that the spindle bore is in fact 1.5". I mean, I knew I was buying the cheapest lathe on ebay- but dang... It was really rough! More-so than what I had seen on Youtube. I'm still happy w/the 7x purchase and build- it really has been fun, even with all the frustration. But TBH, had I known about the 8x lathe w/a 1.5" spindle bore, I probably would not have bothered w/the 7x at all.
Best wishes, but I will be surprised if the quality is much better than 7x lathes.
I recently purchased one of these. The spindle on mine is a solid 1.5", but the hole through the chuck is slightly under that. Overall quality was decent, but like any mini lathe, it has taken a lot of cleaning and adjusting to get it working right.
from the reviews I watched, these machines are still better than the 7 inchers in almost all aspects... I hope you post a review after it's set up
I recently purchased one of these. The spindle on mine is a solid 1.5", but the hole through the chuck is slightly under that. Overall quality was decent, but like any mini lathe, it has taken a lot of cleaning and adjusting to get it working right. I'm also learning how to operate a lathe at the same time, so I can't provide any thoughts on its ability to do imperial threads just. It does come with an extra set of gears.
Well... a bit of a situation, maybe nothing- for those that have ordered a 8x lathe please chime in...I just received my parts box- i.e. tools, change gears and chuck. However, the lathe did not get delivered at the same time. With my last lathe purchase, and with many "unboxing" vids on Youtube, all the parts and such were inside the lathe crate. So I'm not sure if the lathe itself will be coming later today, or tomorrow, or what. How was y'all's lathes shipped? I just checked outside, and there's no crate in the driveway... One of two things happened:- The delivery driver didn't know that the crate went with the parts box and will be back later once he realizes his mistake.- The crate and parts box were put on two separate trucks and the crate will be delivered later today.Worst case scenarios:- Lathe and parts were shipped completely separate and will be delivered at completely different times (not so bad).- Lathe was never shipped and I just paid $800+ for a 5" chuck and a set of change gears.
My parts came separately from the lathe. Received it a day before the crate came. I'll try to take some pictures of the tailstock and my QCTP setup for you as well as those measurements.
im impressed it has the camlock on the tailstock..
