So now that deer season is done for me I decided to do some predator calling. 15 degrees here, I got home from work, grabbed my gear and headed to the property that I deer hunt.
I got there about 430 ish. started with some snowshoe hare sounds for about 5 minutes, then bb cottontail for about 5 minutes, about 2 minutes of silence then ended with nutty nut hatch with the volume turned down a little more than half way.
I was calling it quits. As I was fidgeting with my call remote trying to mute it I heard something coming through the crunch snow, as I looked up I noticed a coyote about 5 yards from my FoxPro. The yote quickly retreated about 10 yards and was looking at my "lil critter" decoy spinning and dancing erratically. As I was trying to find the yote in the scope of my recluse through the trees, I noticed the dog slowly creeping towards the decoy. The yote made it about 3 yards from the decoy when I found it in my crosshairs. I squeezed the trigger the recluse let out a load "Bark"(no pun intended) and the coyote jumped and took off through the hardwoods like his tail was on fire.
I muted the call and walked to where the yote was when I shot. No hair and no blood, so I started tracking it. After about 150 yards of tracking in the snow I found nothing. So thus the end result : coyote 1, Recluse 0..... >:(

So what do you think happened? Wounded it, grazed it, or a clean miss? How far out were you?

30 yards... I'm not quite sure what happened. Kind of hoping clean miss. Could have quite possibly been coyote fever kicking in..

Although you didn't get him it was still a gut hunt...You had the skills to give yourself the opportunity for the kill...it'll happen next time

Impressive Hunt !
You did really well getting a coyote to decoy in to close hunting range.
They are exceptionally wary and have a very good survival senses.
That was quite an accomplishment in itself.
Take heart...next time you will harvest your quarry.
Best Wishes - Tom
