Does it make it with out the moderator?
HW95L .22 shot cycle, ARH kit & Vortek seal. FWIW my ARH kit had a very tight fitting, inside spring, plastic rear guide and a plastic top hat. 715 FPS with H&N FTT 14.66 gr pellets.
Instead of a hiss could it be a tinny vibration like the bear trap mechanism loose? Also try it without the scope. I had a gun making a metallic ring noise noise when I shot it. After going nuts looking for the problem with the gun I removed the scope and the noise went away. The spring in the AO mechanism was ringing. Wasn't happy about it, but at least I knew it wasn't anything bad with the gun itself.

I always knew under lever cockers were weird. Now I have proof. Could it be the slower distribution of air behind the pellet slowly working it's way through the moderator?-Y

If it's gasses after the shot it has to be from residual pressure leaking out or air rushing in to fill a void after the short. A gas hiss is usually high pressure through a very small opening. There's too much space to impede the lower pressure air from refilling the space behind the piston. Even a leaking breech seal would be done leaking by time the pellet reached the moderator. Plus there's plenty of clearance for air to escape between the sliding compression tube and the receiver. If it's a gas noise changing the kit won't help. Have you tried emptying factory moderator?
Maybe it is a spring occilating into place after the shot and rubbing against metal, not just the power spring, could be in the moderator. Shake the rifle and listen for any sounds.-Marty
My hearing is poor but sounds more like a ping. Perhaps it is the cocking rod retainer spring at the muzzle end. My 97 noise is more pronounced. Dave
