Webley Tempest Pistol ... s/n 223092

Hello, everyone ...
A long standing wish came true today when I took delivery of my new (new to me) Webley Tempest. The s/n is clear and reads 223092. The pistol is also clearly marked "WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD" and "MADE IN ENGLAND" in white under the spring chamber, in front of the trigger guard. IT ALSO BEARS THE F PENTASTAR. It reads "WEBLEY TEMPEST" in white on each side of the spring chamber, and has "177-4.5 CAL" on top of the front sight as well as the image of a pellet. It is in remarkably good condition with an absence of any serious marks at all. It appears to have had very little use and took my by surprise when I saw it. At first I thought it must be new.
So, what is it? I was unaware of any Turkish made Tempests at the time I bought it and I don't know how to recognize them. The auction info said that this is a 1980's vintage. Can that be verified by the serial number?
Also, it takes a man and a small boy to cock it. It dry fired fine the one time I tried it. But, it is bone dry everywhere I can see. Would it like a little dry Moly?
Thanks in advance for whatever information anyone can share.

I purchased the turkish tempest when they first came out and it was a real "turkey" - DOA. I returned it immediatly. It was clearly marked as being made in turkey. I have five or six tempests & hurricanes. They are not so easy to cock and you have to get used to it.

I am a long time owner of Webley Tempests and Hurricanes. I bought my first one in 1989 brand new (SN#052501), and I will never let go of it. I have since tuned it (sear, trigger, power washers, etc.) and upgraded the grips from a custom grip maker in the UK.
I love these pistols so much that I now own seven of them (seven Tempests, one Hurricane), and have given even one more away as a present to my older brother Alan, similarly tuned and with identical custom grips from Andy in the UK.
One must be wary of the condition of these pistols as the plastic forearm (or cover) can be easily obtained to make it appear to be a brand new pistol.
Your higher SN number makes me a bit leery as to whether it it a true original Webley from the UK, or perhaps someone has changed out the foregrip plastic cover to make it appear as an original.
Verification of vintage of Tempests (or any Webley airgun) is pretty much not viable. I have tried.
Not owning (or ever wanting to own) the Turk version, I do not have any knowledge on those SN#'s.
If possible, please provide some pics. It may be possible that the first number that you provided of your serial number is not a "2", but possibly the # stamping, as in the '80's at least as far as I know, the serial numbers did not run into the 200,000's and above.
The "F" in pentagon or "Freimark" indicates to me that your gun was originally sold in the Euro market. My own Hurricane also has such the mark.
When and where did you buy your pistol? I watch pretty much all of the auction sites, and if that is from where you purchased it, I can go back and look to see the original listing, and possibly give you a better idea as to how original yours is.
If possible, please provide some pics of your pistol. I kinda know my way around these pistols.
Following are a couple of pics for teasing purposes only.
My first, and favorite
Another with rare match grips
There are a few of the family missing in this last pic.

BTW, I truly apologize for not congratulating you on owning a Tempest.
These are, as Mike Driskill says, "the guns you hate to shoot, but you can't stop shooting them". LOL.
I hope you do indeed have an original, and I will help you out in any way to verify that yours is an original.
PM me if you need any help to get yours in proper order.
I also just re-read your first post.
DO NOT dry fire your pistol!! Nor any airgun!! They need some resistance of pressure in order not to blast the piston seal or break the spring. Your pistol can be de-cocked by holding firmly back the barrel (with a man and a small boy), releasing the trigger, and then easing back the barrel. But please, do NOT dry fire it again.

I too purchased a Tempest back in the 80's. I have the .177 and .22 barrel for it. I do need a new plastic piece for the front. How easily obtainable are they?
The Tempest is a fun gun to shoot but at the time I preferred my old Benjamin 132 for shooting pests. I could shoot it better, I think the recoil of the Tempest hurt my groups. Shooting lefthanded I had to make a set of grips for it. That helped in shooting it better.

Stinger...those grips are AWESOME! Would love to know more about them.
Also, would love to know more about serial numbers - are they a true sequential tally? My Tempest and Hurricane have six-digit numbers beginning with "02" and "05," respectively.
Note, there is an old factory manual for the Tempest in the "stickies" of this site's "Vintage" section.
On early Tempests, having the plastic front sleeve crack underneath was a pretty common problem, later solved by modifying the sleeve to fit less tightly. Chambers in the UK, JG Airguns in the US, etc., would be the places to find replacements.
The classic way to cock Webley pistols (right-handed) is to hold it out in front with your right hand on the grip. Turn your left hand over, to grip the barrel with your thumb at the muzzle. This efficiently uses the muscles in your chest and both arms to pull the action open - much easier than trying to push the barrel away from you, etc. Use and lubrication helps too.
Stinger is correct fo course - DO NOT make a habit of dry firing any springer! But, an OCCASIONAL one will not destroy a Tempest (the factory actually
recommended
one or two when new. The piston seal is a solid chunk of PTFE, this helps it take a set and seal properly). It's generally a low-stressed, over-engineered design for the real world of slip-ups, idiots, and teenagers, LOL.
