I tested a 1977 piston in a brass tube 880 and at the bottom of the compression stroke there was an issue causing air to leak. I think it is because of the flat piston interfering with the retaining ring in the tube. I'm thinking if the 1977 piston is chamfered or radiused like the factory piston it might work. I have a 1977 piston laying around that I think I'll chuck up and cut to see if it will work. Thoughts?

My first thoughts also on the piston.
Cut it like original.

i turned one from aluminum once but the cross pin hole was odd location resulting in the piston not reaching the ring groove.
This left too much headspace and hurt pressure.
I am now better fixtured and may revisit it someday, but got too much in the works at this time.......
Making the piston is simple enough, but fairly involved.
It would be an expensive upgrade, and I'm mot certain that it would be worth it.
The mods to the 880 platform rifles tend to be of the owner do-it-yourself nature.
If the mod doesn't include a piece of a credit card, bit of dental floss or wrap of electrical tape, it is not of interest to the owner...
Can be easily made for use with a bumper or spring.
I never have received any quotes to have springs manufactured, but kinda lost interest......

You can lead a man to water, but you can't keep him from urinating in it.
