I have a Sumatra that was doing the same thing. I removed the fill assembly and cleaned it out and no more problem. It does take a spanner wrench to remove it. I bought a set of wrenches like the ones PA sells but the nob just sheared off. I then modded a spanner wrench that was for my hand pump. It worked just right.

The air flow must close the valve. In the mean time, while bleeding the filling hose, keep the Sumatra vertical, barrel down. The valve will close if you release the air pressure.
A spring assisted fill check valve is one of the upgrades for the Sumatra offered by Will Piatt. Which leads me to believe that the OEM fill valve is an issue with the Sumatra.
