I'd do a state hunting land for your county and others surrounding, it'll give you an idea of where there's public hunting on state land.

I did do a search and Petersburg state game area is not to far, so it is legal to target shoot on state game areas? Should I contact the DNR?

There's a couple different places that I go to, one is posted no target shooting and the other one isn't.  I've heard of people getting tickets at the place that's posted however the guy was doing it right on the two track that runs through the place and being very obvious about it.  There was even a sign no more than 10 yards from where he was doing it.  I even told the guy that he might get a ticket for it but he didn't seem too concerned about it.  If I shoot a target at that spot It's usually where you won't see a DNR way back in where they seldom even go.  When I do it I only take a few shots at it so I can tell where I'm hitting at say 50 yards or whatever.  The place that isn't posted gets used mostly for deer hunting so I won't shoot at targets during season but I'll shoot a little at a target if it's not during deer season.  If I do plan on shooting a lot at something I go over to my brothers place, he's out in the country and he loves to shoot himself.  He shoots a lot of powder burners out in his back yard but does  respect the neighbors enough to not go hog wild with them.  Most all those neighbor's have 2 acre lots in his area.  Years ago I had permission to shoot out at the sheriff's range however things are much different these days and they'd pretty much ban anyone that wasn't on the force.  Private shooting ranges cost an arm and leg to shoot on.  Here in Kalamazoo we actually have an indoor airgun range that's pretty nice from what I understand and it only cost like 8 dollars if you're not a member on specified shooting days, I've never bothered going to it even though some people have tried talking me into it.

I just googled public shooting ranges in Michigan, there's one called echo point thats on Allegan state game area, that's probably 40 miles from me and I may go check it out sometime in warmer weather, could be very interesting.
