HiI have been rebuilding machine tools for a long time and might offer a few suggestions before you start. Getting the surface plate was a great start and sharpened files will work fine for now but keep them sharp. There are a few good books and some great articles in Home Shops machinist magazine and a great forum at Practiclemachinist.com on Machine tool reconditioning. Please read up before you start. The main goal should be to get things aligned right by removing metal to that end and not just to make things flat. I made a few big mistakes by not taking my time and figuring out what needed to come off. I find it very rewarding and I believe that most 'import' machine tools can be improved by scraping them in.
