Anyone have N.U.A.H. goals for 2023?
ER00z:
Does anyone prep for long range shooting by shooting at short range? By this I mean figuring your guns POI at 10 to 30 yards to get you in the ballpark at 100 yards...
For example, on a nice day you confirm zero at 30 yards. Then plug your guns numbers in a ballistic calculator to get estimates for 100 (or whatever) then either dial scope or adjust rings/base to abouts where you'd be shooting at 100 yards/meters. Then shoot at shorter distance (say 10 to 30 yards) and measure your actual POI from the POA. Hopefully this makes sense to others, haha. I've always figured doing this to get roughly "on paper" at distance was better than walking your shots in during live practice.
I'm curious as what steps folks prep for long range or if they just go shoot...
Back_Roads:
I can work my ballistics out from muzzle to 50 yards at my home range, then take that data and apply it at 50- 100 or more depending on the platform, at an area where there is room to shoot.
KevinJBrown:
Zack,
Once I zeroed my system, I twist turrets. I calculate from there for the first time I shoot a given pellet and develop my ballistic tables from there. I keep a bunch of scope dope that I can use to let me “dial” in. This gets me real close for my first shots and then I dial in from there for the exact conditions when shooting at long range. Once in a while I go back and check my zero and if something changes I figure out what and fix it or adjust to it.
For hunting ranges my dope is good enough.
FWIW my son just bought a new system and ballistics software that we are now determining to see if we can use without custom dope chart for match grade ammo (on what is a new Precision Rifle System).

For hunting, I use a smaller scope. For 100 yd work, I have a larger scope. So no, I don't have dope charts for short range zero that go to 100+.
