NOT QUITE VINTAGE, MORE LIKE ANCIENT!

Last week I was searching around on craigs' list for a bargain and found someone selling a model #1 Quakenbush. They thought it was from the twenties and it is missing the cocking assembly. They were asking $250 for it. It's got some rust and the stock could use a refinishing and of course it can't be fired. I dismissed it as I was really looking for a shooter. Yesterday morning I was looking if anything new had been posted and the Quakenbush was still there. I contacted the seller, offered $100 and settled on $120. Picked it up last night! Even if I can't get the parts, I thought it would be great to just clean it up and put it in a viewing case.
Trying to find more info and checking for parts. Have a computer glitch so photos will have to wait!
If anyone has one of these or info. , please share!

I've only done business with them once buying parts and I think they have day jobs or are retired but I think the people at JG airguns have an interest in the old Quakenbush guns... I remember reading something about it on their main page... They may know a good deal about your gun and be able to make parts for it but I don't know how willing they are to do it or how long it would take....
Shoot em' an email.. I'm sure they'd like to see an email that says something about Quakenbush instead of the usual Crosman stuff...LOL

I saw their website, I'm trying to get through to Quakenbush to see if he's willing to part with some additional info about this thing, and maybe he's got a few parts left lying around he'd part with??!! Seems he's up to his ears in orders for his latest creation. we'll see....

I'm guessing that Dennis Quackenbush would be only too happy to manufacture any parts you need....

thats one good thing about air guns....
other than the spring or barrel you
can make all the parts with a bit of gear

Those old Quackenbush rifles (and pistols) were made by Henry M Quackenbush. He may or may not be related to dennis quackenbush who makes the custom hi power PCP's.
"Henry QB patented his first air pistol ~ June 1871. The QB No 1 air gun (rifle?) came out a few years later (1873? as advertised in the Great Western Gun Works catalog in 1873)
QB produced 8 major models of shoulder guns, 7 of which were variations of the number 1 model with the push in barrel. Known as models 1,2,3,4,7,9 and 10. Model 5 was a combined air gun and .22 rifle developed by Haviland and Gunn. Number 7 was a sheet metal product, BB gun, developed by Paul QB to meet the competition from Daisy, King and others. The air gun business gradually declined until the death of Henry QB in Sept 1933. The company stayed in business (it was modern in comparison to others) doing general machine work, screw machine work, wire forming and plating......
QB appears to have been the first user of the spiral wound spring, and was interested in use of rubber band as a substitute for a metal spring. This idea was used in the "Lightning" air gun, patented in July 1884.....354 were made, but the model was apparently abandoned as a failure"

Thanks for the replies, the more info I find on this just keeps me wanting more of it. Evidently Quakenbush was an incredible inventor and the accounts of his life are totally engrossing.

I thought that Dennis was Henry's grandson
(but according to his website he is a "distant relative"),
but I could be totally out of whack on that.... According to Dennis' website, however, he makes custom parts for all sorts of antique airguns and 'locks (old blackpowder guns).... I'm sure there are others that could do the job as well, I know of one person in Ontario, Canada, who could likely do the job.... and he has tons of information about antique airguns....
Edited to correct information in bold....

I've got an e-mail into JG Airguns, seems they're away till next week. Did get an auto reply that would be in contact when they get back. Happened to find out how this gun is cocked, put it on your shoe or something similar, barrel down, and push down till it breaks and cocks itself and exposes the loading port. Yes, the barrel slides directly into the receiver. Then slide the barrel forward to load the pellet into the breach for firing. Incredibly clever with a minimum of parts!
