Title: 2016 DNR Digest
Post by: Wayne52 on November 08, 2016, 06:53:41 AM
In case you haven't read it, here's the link http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/hunting_and_trapping_digest_461177_7.pdf (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/hunting_and_trapping_digest_461177_7.pdf)  I recently flagged down a DNR at the state land that I've been hunting, I told him that I've heard that it's legal in Michigan to hunt with an air rifle and he didn't know so I gave him my phone number, but better yet while I was out hunting he had left a card on my wiper, it said yes it's legal page 20 on the digest.  I had met this DNR about 10 years ago at a county park while I was metal detecting, he recommended I try the island.

Page 20 for hunting deer with a airgun.

Just an update. Applies to Michigan.  The link still works. For the 2021 digest the info is on page 27.
It reads:
Can I hunt with an air gun?
Pneumatic guns, or “air guns,” are considered firearms for hunting purposes. Pneumatic guns must meet firearm requirements for season, species hunted and zone you are hunting in.

Tim I talked with a couple of DNR officers out at the state land during the 2021 deer season, they didn't even bat an eye when I told and showed them the gun and slugs that I was using from it, they were fine with it.  It's my .357 Challenger that's probably delivering about 200fpe which is plenty to kill a deer.

That’s cool.  I have to admit these airguns are not child’s toys. I have nothing more than .22 at present but have certainly been eyeballing the threads on some of the big bores.

Tim another neat thing that I never knew was there's a shooting range in Allegan that's open to the public on DNR hunting grounds, I'm going to go check it out sometime because I could probably bring along a few guns, tank of air and have a blast out there.  When I seen you're location I was thinking Byron Center thinking you weren't that far from it however you're near Flint which is quite a drive for you.

Tim and Wayne, there is also the Rose Lake Shooting Range near Bath Michigan not far from I-69 (Woodbury Rd). I've been wanting to go here...

Does anyone know if it's legal to hunt with a moderator in Michigan?

Yes it is Kevin !!! I've got them on a lot of my guns, I've been carded by 4 different DNR officers and never a problem.  All they wanted to see was my hunting license 8)
